♟️ About Schachverein Würselen 1926 e.V.
Schachverein Würselen 1926 e.V. is a chess club based in Würselen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Founded in 1926, the club celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026. It belongs to the organized chess structure of the Aachener Schachverband and Schachverband Mittelrhein. Its permanent playing venue is the Kulturzentrum Altes Rathaus in central Würselen, where members meet for training, tournaments, league matches, and regular club evenings. The club provides chess for players of different ages and strengths. Its activities include regional team competition, adult and youth training, internal events, the traditional Neujahrsopen, a separate Jugend-Neujahrsopen, school chess, the Grundschulcup, and rated tournaments. Youth training currently takes place in several ability groups, while the club also cooperates with primary schools in Würselen. Moreover, current federation records list more than 100 registered members, making Würselen an active chess organization within the Aachen region. Michael Havenith is the current Chairman of Schachverein Würselen 1926, while Erwin Sanen serves as Tournament Director and is the most useful operational contact for tournament matters. Jonas Dietz leads the youth section. The centenary year has already included a special simultaneous exhibition with GM Matthias Blübaum and the 2026 Grundschulcup. The club is now preparing the Herbst-Open Würselen 2026, scheduled for October 16–18, 2026 at the Altes Rathaus.📜 History and Competitive Development
Schachverein Würselen was founded in 1926 and initially played for many years in local hospitality venues. One of its long-standing homes was the Parkhotel, followed by the Gaststätte Houben near St. Sebastian. During the 1980s, around 40 members regularly gathered for Friday club evenings and long-form tournaments. However, the first team’s promotion to Verbandsliga West required Sunday league matches, which eventually made a change of venue necessary. Long-serving Chairman Paul Bresser helped secure the club’s move to the Altes Rathaus, which remains its home today. The move also benefited the growing youth section by providing a more suitable environment for training and junior chess. Competitive progress accelerated during the 2000s and 2010s. Würselen won the Verbandsliga West in 2006 and later reached the Regionalliga. Further promotions followed, and in 2014 the club earned promotion to the Oberliga NRW. Two years later, Würselen achieved one of the strongest results in its history by earning promotion to the 2. Bundesliga.♜ Team Chess
Team competition remains an important part of club life. During the 2025–2026 season, Würselen’s first team competed in the Verbandsliga West. The team completed the season with a convincing 6–2 victory against Kohlscheid. That result brought Würselen to 10 match points and sixth place in the final standings, comfortably securing its position in the league. For the 2026–2027 season, the first team again competes in Verbandsliga West. The club also fields its second team in the Bezirksliga and another team in the local Kreisklasse structure. This multi-team system gives members opportunities to compete at different levels. In addition, stronger junior players can progress from youth events into adult league chess as their experience develops.🎓 Youth Chess and School Programs
Youth development has played an important role at Schachverein Würselen for decades. The club currently runs five ability-based youth training groups on Fridays from 18:00, together with an additional Thursday group. Jonas Dietz serves as Youth Director. The club also maintains connections with local schools, helping introduce primary-school pupils to chess before they move into regular club training. On July 6, 2026, the club organized the Grundschulcup 2026 at the Sebastianusschule. Teams and players came from four local primary schools: Sebastianusschule, Grundschule Würselen-Mitte, Grundschule Weiden-Linden, and GGS Bardenberg. The club also stages a separate Jugend-Neujahrsopen, while the main Neujahrsopen traditionally takes place at the beginning of each year. Together, these activities provide young players with both structured training and practical tournament experience.🎉 100th Anniversary in 2026
The club marked its centenary with a special chess event on June 21, 2026, featuring German Grandmaster Matthias Blübaum. A total of 28 current and former club members participated in the celebration at the Altes Rathaus. The program began with a question-and-answer session about professional chess, tournament preparation, training, and Blübaum’s career. Blübaum then played a simultaneous exhibition against all 28 participants. He won 27 games, while former Würselen Chairman Lars Döring achieved the only draw. The event formed one of the principal celebrations of the club’s 100th anniversary and connected several generations of Würselen players with one of Germany’s leading Grandmasters.🏆 Herbst-Open Würselen 2026
The Herbst-Open Würselen 2026 is scheduled from October 16–18, 2026 at the Kulturzentrum Altes Rathaus, Kaiserstraße 36, Würselen. Players will contest five rounds using an accelerated Swiss system with Baku acceleration. The classical time control is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the remainder of the game, with a 30-second increment from move one. The tournament will count for both FIDE Elo and German DWZ ratings. Participation is limited to 60 players, and the organizers have announced a total prize fund exceeding €1,500, including overall, rating, and special-category prizes. Erwin Sanen serves as Tournament Director, while FA Dr. Johannes Baier is Chief Arbiter. The tournament forms a major part of the club’s centenary-year competition program and expands the Herbst-Open from the smaller rating-group format used in 2025 into a full FIDE-rated weekend Open.
