The club’s documented history begins on July 16, 1930. In its earliest years, activity centered on club evenings, practice games, and friendly matches against other chess organizations. Competitive activity was disrupted during World War II and the immediate postwar period. In 1950, Bad Schwartau formally joined the Schachverband Schleswig-Holstein with 12 adult and two junior members. From there, the organization gradually developed its league structure and youth activities. The modern club has grown considerably beyond those early numbers. Current Schleswig-Holstein federation records list more than 100 members, while the club itself highlights a strong junior section and multiple teams. Since 2014, another defining element has been the Internationales Bad Schwartauer Schachopen. The tournament is traditionally played between Christmas and New Year and has developed into one of the club’s most important public projects.

🏆 Internationales Bad Schwartauer Schachopen

The Internationales Bad Schwartauer Schachopen has been organized annually since 2014 and has become the club’s flagship tournament. The 2025 edition attracted more than 130 players, continuing the event’s development as a substantial year-end Open. The 11th Internationales Bad Schwartauer Schachopen is scheduled from December 27–30, 2026 at the Krummlandhalle of the Elisabeth-Selbert-Gemeinschaftsschule in Bad Schwartau. Players will contest seven Swiss-system rounds. The classical time control is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the remainder of the game, with a 30-second increment from move one. Results count for both German and FIDE ratings. The organizers have set a maximum capacity of 201 players. Thomas Schmid serves as Tournament Director, while FA Dr. Johannes Baier is Chief Arbiter. The tournament closes the club’s annual calendar with four days of internationally rated chess. Therefore, it combines Bad Schwartau’s local club structure with a competition that attracts players from across Germany and abroad.
