Schachklub Marburg 1931/72 e.V. is a long-established chess club in Marburg, Hesse, Germany. The club traces its history to 1931 and has more than 170 members. Its player base includes hobby players, tournament competitors, children, juniors, adults, and master-level players.

The club gives players several regular chess locations in Marburg. The main weekly club night takes place on Fridays at Südstadttreff im Alten Schwanhof on Schwanallee. Adult training runs on Thursdays at Nachbarschaftszentrum Waldtal. In addition, youth training uses separate venues and groups, which gives developing players a more structured learning path.

🏆 Chess Events and Activities

Schachklub Marburg 1931/72 e.V. runs a large team chess program. In the 2025/26 season, the club lists eight teams across different leagues. Its first team competes in the Hessenliga, while other teams play in Landesklasse, Bezirksoberliga, Bezirksliga, Kreisliga, and Kreisklasse. This structure gives members regular match practice at several playing levels.

The club also organizes major and local tournament activity. Its events include the Marburger Schachtage, the Lahn-Eder Open, DWZ rating tournaments, rapid events, and club-level competitions. The Marburger Schachtage is an international classical open with seven Swiss-system rounds, A and B tournament sections, and ELO and DWZ evaluation. The Lahn-Eder Open also gives players a serious over-the-board tournament format and has included ELO evaluation.

Youth chess forms another important part of the club’s activity. The club runs youth chess training for several levels, including beginner groups, advanced groups, U10 talent training, U12 talent training, and a separate girls’ group. It also takes part in youth team competition in the Lahn/Eder chess district.

Players can expect a broad and active chess environment in Marburg. The club offers Friday play, Thursday training, team matches, open tournaments, rapid chess, rating events, and youth programs. Therefore, new players can start with a regular club evening, while stronger players can move into league chess and rated tournament chess.

The club also works with school chess in the Marburg school district. Many schools in the area offer chess clubs, often with support from Schachklub Marburg 1931/72 e.V. This gives children a practical route from school chess into club training and youth tournaments.

In addition, the club maintains activity for older players through a long-running Marburg city championship format for older-player chess. The club also supports women and girls through a dedicated girls’ training group on Saturdays. As a result, Schachklub Marburg 1931/72 e.V. offers a wide chess pathway for players of different ages, formats, and competitive goals.
