♟️ About Schachklub Chessflyers Kloten

Schachklub Chessflyers Kloten is an established chess club based in Kloten, in the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland. The organization was founded on August 12, 1954, under the name Swissair. It originally served as the airline company’s chess club before developing into an independent local association for Kloten and the surrounding Zurich Unterland region.

Today, the club has more than 50 members, including adults, women, juniors, recreational players, and experienced tournament competitors. Its members come from Kloten and several neighboring communities. The club welcomes new players who want to improve their skills, join official competitions, or enjoy regular over-the-board chess in a social environment.

The club’s principal playing venue is Landgasthof Breiti in Winkel, near Kloten and Zurich Airport. Regular club evenings take place on Tuesdays, while selected team matches and special competitions are held on Saturdays. In addition, the organization runs Wednesday chess activities for children, young players, adults, and visitors who want to discover the club.

🏆 Club Activities and Competitive Chess

Schachklub Chessflyers Kloten maintains an extensive program of internal tournaments and team competitions. Its annual club schedule includes a club championship, knockout cup, rapid championship, blitz championship, and several closed summer competitions.

The club also participates in the Swiss Team Championship, Swiss Group Championship, and Zurich Team Championship. It fields several teams across different divisions, which allows members with different playing strengths to represent the organization in official competition.

Regular club evenings combine tournament games, casual chess, analysis, and preparation for upcoming matches. Therefore, members can choose between serious rated competition and more relaxed playing opportunities. The club continually updates its calendar with internal events, team fixtures, and external tournament invitations.

Schachklub Chessflyers Kloten is affiliated with the Swiss chess structure and maintains an active presence in regional competition. Its players participate in events throughout the Canton of Zurich and other parts of Switzerland.

🌱 Youth Chess and Chessflyers Open

The club supports youth chess through regular training and practical playing opportunities. Its chess school welcomes children, teenagers, young adults, and adult beginners, including participants who have no previous chess experience.

Training sessions help students develop tactical awareness, concentration, strategic thinking, creativity, and practical decision-making. Beginners can first attend a trial session before joining the regular semester program. The club also encourages young players to gain experience through open tournaments and Swiss junior competitions.

One of the organization’s principal annual events is the Chessflyers Open. The club holds this one-day rapid tournament every August and welcomes juniors, adult club players, strong national competitors, and visitors from other chess organizations.

The 18th Chessflyers Open takes place on August 15, 2026, at Landgasthof Breiti in Winkel. The event features seven rapid rounds in one open section, together with general, rating-category, senior, and junior prizes. Matthias Denzler and Roger Loup serve as tournament directors.

Through its weekly meetings, youth program, internal competitions, team participation, and annual rapid tournament, Schachklub Chessflyers Kloten continues a chess tradition that has lasted for more than seven decades.
