📜 History and Development

The club was formally founded on Monday, February 7, 1927, at Hotel “Zur Linde” in Bad Harzburg. More than twenty local chess enthusiasts participated in the foundation, with Horst Kühne, Walter Eicke, and Mr. Leichte forming the first board. During almost a century of activity, SK Bad Harzburg has experienced different periods of competitive and organizational development. The club has documented this history extensively in its own chronicle, including club champions, board members, team results, and significant events. Today, the organization remains firmly rooted in Bad Harzburg. Moreover, its mixture of tournament chess, youth activities, social events, and public participation allows it to reach both established club members and people discovering chess for the first time.

♜ Club Chess and Competition

SK Bad Harzburg maintains an active internal tournament program. One of its central competitions is the Open Bad Harzburg Club Championship, which is accessible beyond the club’s regular membership. The 2025–2026 Open Club Championship was played over seven rounds. Ludger Dege won the competition, adding his name to the club’s long history of internal champions. Regular Wednesday meetings provide time for tournament games, training, and casual chess. Following the 2026 summer break, the club announced a combined meeting time from 6:00 PM for juniors and adults at the Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium. In addition, SK Bad Harzburg participates in the organized regional chess structure of Lower Saxony and maintains links with the Niedersächsischer Schachverband and regional chess organizations.

🎓 Youth Chess and Community Activity

Youth chess has been a significant part of the club’s development. Its “Schulen ans Brett” initiative introduced chess through local school-related activities and received national sports-club recognition at the regional level. The project won the Stern des Sports in Bronze in 2014. Subsequently, it represented the region at the Lower Saxony competition for the Silver Star and received an additional development prize. SK Bad Harzburg also participates actively in community life. Alongside internal social events such as summer and Christmas gatherings, the club regularly presents chess at public events in the town. Most recently, it operated a chess stand at the Salz- und Lichterfest on August 22–23, 2026, where visitors could meet club members and play chess in Bad Harzburg’s central pedestrian area.

The Bad Harzburger Schachtage are the club’s flagship open tournament and one of its most important recurring projects. The competition takes place in the Großer Saal of Bündheimer Schloss in Bad Harzburg and attracts players from outside the local area. The 23rd edition was held from October 14–18, 2025. Meanwhile, the 24th Bad Harzburger Schachtage are scheduled for October 13–17, 2026, again with SK Bad Harzburg as the official organizer and the City of Bad Harzburg as patron.
