Schachfreunde Nickenich e.V. is an established chess club based in Nickenich, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The organization supports competitive chess, youth training, team leagues, and major regional tournaments. Moreover, it serves players of different ages and playing strengths within the Rhein-Ahr-Mosel chess community.

The club operates under the leadership of Jens Wohde, who serves as First Chairman. Christoph Roos is the Second Chairman, while Günter Wohde manages the club’s finances. Together with trainers, team captains, volunteers, and tournament helpers, they maintain an active chess program throughout the year.

Schachfreunde Nickenich combines serious competition with a strong community atmosphere. In recent seasons, the club has entered up to eight teams in regional and state leagues. Its program has included senior, junior, women’s, and development teams. Therefore, members can gain competitive experience at a level that suits their ability.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Activity

The club’s best-known annual event is the Schachtreff Nickenich. It takes place during the first weekend of September at the Pellenzhalle. The program combines the Rhein-Ahr-Mosel Youth Open with the Pellenz Cup for four-player teams. As a result, children, teenagers, adults, and experienced club players can compete during the same tournament weekend.

The Rhein-Ahr-Mosel Youth Open has developed into one of the region’s leading junior rapid tournaments. It provides separate U18, U14, U12, U10, and U8 competitions. In addition, every participant receives a material prize and certificate. The top three players in every age group also receive trophies.

The Pellenz Cup welcomes four-player teams from different clubs and regions. Mixed-club teams may also participate. Moreover, the tournament serves as the Rhein-Ahr-Mosel district rapid team championship. The club limits entries to preserve suitable playing conditions inside the hall.

The Schachtreff has attracted hundreds of players and guests from clubs across Germany. In 2025, the Youth Open welcomed 180 young players. The following day, 48 teams and 208 players entered the Pellenz Cup. Furthermore, a large volunteer team managed registration, catering, playing equipment, results, and the awards ceremonies.

Schachfreunde Nickenich has also hosted important regional and state competitions. These include Rheinland individual championships, rapid championships, and the Rheinland-Pfalz Open. Consequently, the club has earned recognition for reliable tournament delivery and strong playing conditions.

🎓 Youth Chess and Club Community

Youth development forms a central part of the club’s work. Junior training takes place every Friday at the primary school in Nickenich. Young players begin at 4:30 p.m., while the adult session starts at 6:30 p.m. Therefore, children can progress from introductory lessons to league and championship competition.

The youth program is supported by trainers including Christoph Roos and Kathrin Bast. Club juniors regularly qualify for district, Rheinland, and Rhineland-Palatinate championships. In addition, the organization runs internal youth competitions and gives young members places in its adult league teams.

The club also promotes opportunities for girls and women. It created a dedicated women’s team and has supported female junior players through regular training and team competition. Meanwhile, its youngest members gain experience through development teams in the lower regional divisions.

Schachfreunde Nickenich welcomes new players who would like to try club chess. Visitors can attend the Friday sessions and meet the training team before joining. Above all, the organization connects youth coaching, league competition, public tournaments, and volunteer involvement within one active local chess community.
