Schachfreunde Nickenich e.V. is a chess club based in Nickenich, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The club belongs to the Schachbezirk Rhein-Ahr-Mosel and the wider Schachverband Rheinland structure. Its regular club premises are located at the Grundschule Nickenich on Kolpingstraße, where members meet for training, league chess, individual competitions, and club activities. In 2026, the club is preparing the 33rd Schachtreff Nickenich, scheduled for September 5–6. The weekend combines the 33rd Rhein-Ahr-Mosel Jugend-Open with the 27th Pellenz-Cup and is one of the largest recurring chess gatherings organized by the club.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Activity

Schachfreunde Nickenich maintains an unusually broad team structure for a local chess club. Recent seasons have included teams for experienced adult competitors, developing players, juniors, seniors, and women. The club’s stronger teams compete beyond the local district structure. During the 2025–2026 season, Schachfreunde Nickenich II played in the Rheinlandliga. In February 2026, the team earned a 4–4 draw against SG Trier II, with younger players also contributing important points. This team structure gives developing players a practical route into competitive chess. Younger members can begin in lower divisions and gradually move toward stronger teams as their playing level improves. The club also regularly supports competitions organized by the regional federation. During the 2026 Rheinland Championship in Andernach, Jens Wohde, Dirk Stein, and members of the Nickenich youth section assisted with tournament setup and organization.

🎓 Youth Chess and Player Development

Youth development is one of the defining strengths of Schachfreunde Nickenich. The club maintains regular training and actively sends its juniors to district, Rheinland, Rhineland-Palatinate, and national competitions. Several young Nickenich players achieved strong results during the 2025–2026 period. Mick Jussack finished second in his rating group at the Deutsche Schach-Amateurmeisterschaft qualifying tournament in Bonn, scoring four points from five games and qualifying for the national DSAM final in Dresden. The club also fields young players in regional tournaments across several age categories. Moreover, its youth structure has produced successful team results and individual championship qualifications. Community cooperation complements formal training. In June 2026, Schachfreunde Nickenich supplied chess equipment for the first chess tournament at IGS Pellenz, helping 25 students take part in a seven-round school competition.

🏆 Schachtreff Nickenich

The Schachtreff Nickenich is the club’s flagship tournament project and takes place annually during the first weekend of September at the Pellenzhalle. The event has developed into a major regional chess gathering. In 2025, the 32nd Rhein-Ahr-Mosel Jugend-Open attracted 180 children and teenagers, while the 26th Pellenz-Cup brought together 48 four-player teams and 208 competitors. Organizers reported approximately 500 players and visitors across the tournament weekend. The youth competition is divided into age categories and gives younger players extensive rapid-chess experience. Meanwhile, the Pellenz-Cup is open to players of all ages and allows mixed teams made up of competitors from different clubs. A large volunteer team from Schachfreunde Nickenich manages the tournament hall, registration, catering, prizes, and general organization. Consequently, the tournament has developed a strong reputation within the Rhein-Ahr-Mosel chess community.

🌟 33rd Schachtreff Nickenich 2026

The 33rd Schachtreff Nickenich is scheduled for September 5–6, 2026 at the Pellenzhalle in Nickenich. On Saturday, September 5, the 33rd Rhein-Ahr-Mosel Jugend-Open will feature separate U18, U14, U12, U10, and U8 competitions. Players will contest seven Swiss-system rounds at 15 minutes + 5 seconds per move. Every participant receives a prize and certificate, while the top three players in each age category receive trophies. The following day, September 6, the club will organize the 27th Pellenz-Cup for four-player teams. The competition also uses seven rounds at 15+5 and has a maximum capacity of 48 teams. The Pellenz-Cup simultaneously serves as the Rhein-Ahr-Mosel District Team Rapid Championship. Cross-club teams are permitted, and individual players can also attend with the possibility of being added to incomplete teams. Jens Wohde serves as the principal organizer and contact for both competitions. Sebastian Busch, Mayor of the Verbandsgemeinde Pellenz, is the patron of the 2026 tournament weekend.
