♟️ About Schachfreunde Augsburg e.V.
Schachfreunde Augsburg e.V. is a chess club based in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 2012, the club has grown rapidly into one of the larger chess organizations in Bavarian Swabia. The City of Augsburg lists 138 members in 2026, including 65 members aged 18 or younger. Schachfreunde Augsburg belongs to the Bavarian and German chess structures and combines high-level team competition with a particularly extensive youth and training program. The club fields numerous adult and junior teams, provides training for complete beginners through advanced tournament players, and organizes internal and open competitions. During the 2025–2026 season, it entered nine adult teams, three U20 teams, and additional U12, U14, and U16 squads. Moreover, its youth teams won all three Swabian U12, U14, and U16 team titles in 2026. After many years at the Drei-Auen-Bildungshaus, the club moved during summer 2026; regular Friday training will resume on September 18 at the Paul-Klee-Gymnasium in Gersthofen. Aleksandar Vučković is the current Chairman and principal organizational contact of Schachfreunde Augsburg. The 2025–2026 season became one of the strongest in the club’s short history: the first team won the Oberliga and earned promotion to the 2. Bundesliga, while the club also became 2026 Bavarian Team Cup Champion. Its next major tournament project is the 4th Freundschachts-Open, scheduled for October 31–November 3, 2026 at Wittelsbacher Schloss Friedberg.📜 Development and Competitive Growth
Schachfreunde Augsburg was established in 2012 with a concept that combined serious chess training with an open approach toward players of different ages and backgrounds. The organization expanded quickly from a relatively small new club into a large competitive structure. Within five years, the club already had five adult teams and had progressed to Schwabenliga level. Youth chess developed just as quickly. The most important early national achievement came in 2019, when the club’s U20 team won the German U20 Team Championship. Growth continued during the following seasons. By 2025–2026, Schachfreunde Augsburg fielded nine adult teams ranging from Oberliga to local Kreisklasse competition. In addition, its youth department maintained teams across several age groups and Bavarian competition levels. The club also organizes its own tournaments. Since 2023, the Freundschachts-Open at Wittelsbacher Schloss Friedberg has developed into its flagship classical event, attracting players from Augsburg, Bavaria, other parts of Germany, and abroad.♜ Team Chess and the 2. Bundesliga Promotion
The first team competed in the Oberliga during the 2025–2026 season. After challenging for promotion in previous campaigns, Augsburg secured the championship with one round still remaining and earned the long-awaited promotion to the 2. Bundesliga for 2026–2027. Strong team chess extends far beyond the first squad. During 2025–2026, the second team competed in Regionalliga Süd-West, while the third played in Schwabenliga 1. Six additional adult teams competed throughout the Augsburg district league structure. The club added another major trophy in July 2026 by winning the Bayerischer Mannschaftspokal. Augsburg defeated PTSV SK Hof 3–1 in the semifinal before facing SC Noris-Tarrasch Nürnberg in the final. The deciding match finished 2–2, but Augsburg won through the tiebreak after Vadim Lavrinenkov scored an important victory on the top board. The Bavarian Cup victory qualified Schachfreunde Augsburg for the next German Team Cup competition and added another significant achievement to its promotion season.🎓 Youth Chess and Player Development
Youth development is one of the strongest areas of Schachfreunde Augsburg. The club provides several training groups, ranging from children learning their first chess concepts to strong juniors preparing for Bavarian and German championships. Experienced coaches include strong tournament players such as Žarko Vučković, who works with the club’s advanced youth group. The training structure emphasizes chess understanding, tactical and strategic development, tournament preparation, and practical competition. The 2026 Swabian youth team season was particularly successful. Schachfreunde Augsburg won the team championships in U12, U14, and U16, completing a clean sweep of the three age categories. Several juniors also competed at Bavarian and German individual championships during 2026. Meanwhile, the club organizes training camps and internal youth championships to provide additional practical experience. This development system builds on the club’s 2019 German U20 team championship and continues to produce players capable of competing at state and national level.🏆 4th Freundschachts-Open 2026
