Schachclub Therwil is an established chess organization based in Therwil, in the Basel-Landschaft canton of Switzerland. The club was founded in 1973 by thirteen local chess enthusiasts. Since then, it has developed into one of the larger clubs affiliated with the Swiss Chess Federation. Today, more than 90 active members participate in its programs. It is also affiliated with the Northwest Switzerland Chess Association and contributes actively to organized chess throughout the Basel region.

🏆 Club Chess, Teams and Training

Schachclub Therwil provides regular playing and training opportunities for beginners, improving players, experienced competitors, and seniors. Adult members meet for the main club evening on Thursdays, while an additional open session takes place on Tuesdays. Moreover, the club offers separate junior lessons for beginners and advanced young players twice each week. Members compete in Swiss national and regional team championships, junior leagues, club championships, rapid events, and blitz competitions. The club also organizes the Therwiler Afternoon Open and has hosted regional championships and Swiss junior qualification events. In addition, its senior group meets regularly for social chess. This broad program allows members to move from introductory training to formal individual and team competition.

🌍 Therwil Youth Team Tournament

Schachclub Therwil organizes the annual Therwil Youth Team Tournament, one of Switzerland’s longest-running youth chess competitions. The first edition took place in 1983 with nineteen three-player teams. Over the following decades, the tournament became a recognized fixture in the Swiss junior chess program. The event traditionally features three-player teams in the U10, U13, and U18 categories. Furthermore, it welcomes teams from chess clubs, schools, junior programs, and independent groups. The 2026 edition attracted more than 270 children, demonstrating the tournament’s continued national appeal. The club coordinates registrations, team categories, pairings, playing equipment, schedules, catering, prizes, volunteers, and participant communication. The Therwil Youth Team Tournament 2027 is scheduled for May 2, 2027. Through this competition, the club gives young players an accessible introduction to team chess while strengthening cooperation between junior programs across Switzerland.
