♟️ About Schachclub Therwil

Schachclub Therwil is an established chess club based in Therwil, Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland. Founded in 1973 by 13 local chess enthusiasts, the organization has developed into one of the larger chess clubs in its region. Today, it has more than 90 active members, ranging from children as young as six to senior players over 80. The club provides a welcoming environment for recreational players, ambitious juniors, experienced tournament competitors, and seniors. Regular activities include club evenings, open chess sessions, junior training, internal championships, rapid and blitz chess, team competitions, lectures, and chess courses. Moreover, Schachclub Therwil maintains its own dedicated playing venue at Benkenstrasse 20. Schachclub Therwil is affiliated with the Swiss Chess Federation (SSB) and the Northwestern Switzerland Chess Association (NSV). Youth development has formed an important part of its identity since 1978. In addition, the club has a long competitive history that includes national team achievements and one of Switzerland’s most established junior team tournaments.

🏆 Jugend-Team-Turnier Therwil

The club’s flagship event is the Jugend-Team-Turnier Therwil (JTT), a long-running team tournament for young chess players. The competition began in 1983 and developed into one of Switzerland’s traditional youth chess events. Teams compete in age categories including U10, U13, and U18, allowing clubs, chess schools, school teams, and other junior groups to participate. Over the decades, many strong Swiss players gained some of their earliest tournament experience at the Therwil event. Therefore, the JTT serves both as a competitive tournament and as an accessible introduction to team chess. The tournament has grown substantially. In 2026, more than 270 children participated, supported by around 30 volunteers from Schachclub Therwil. Teams travelled from different parts of Switzerland and neighboring regions, creating a major day of junior chess in Therwil. The next edition is scheduled for May 2, 2027.

🎓 Youth Chess and Training

Junior development is one of the central priorities of Schachclub Therwil. The club began systematic youth development in 1978, only five years after its foundation. Today, it maintains separate weekly training sessions for beginners and advanced young players. Beginner groups currently train on Tuesdays and Fridays from 17:00 to 18:00, while advanced juniors train from 18:00 to 19:00 on the same days. The club’s Youth Chess Director is Ernst Mischler, who coordinates the junior program together with other trainers and volunteers. Young members can progress from basic instruction to tournaments, regional championships, team competition, and national youth events. The long-term results of this approach are visible throughout the club’s history. Several strong players developed through the Therwil environment, while club representatives have won regional and national junior titles.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Activities

Schachclub Therwil participates actively in the Swiss Team Championship and Swiss Group Championship systems. In the 2026 Swiss Team Championship, the club fields three teams. Therwil 1 competes in the 2nd League, Therwil 2 in the 3rd League, and Therwil 3 in the 4th League. The club also runs its own championship and other internal competitions. Furthermore, members participate in regional events, rapid tournaments, blitz competitions, national championships, and open tournaments throughout Switzerland. A new addition in 2026 was the first Therwiler Rapid Championship, a seven-round FIDE-rated rapid competition for club members. The event reflects the organization’s continuing effort to broaden its tournament program. Regular adult chess takes place on Thursday evenings from 19:30, while an additional open playing evening takes place on Tuesdays. Seniors also meet separately on Monday afternoons for social chess.

🌍 Regional Tournament Organization

Schachclub Therwil regularly works with the Nordwestschweizer Schachverband to host important regional competitions. In 2026, Therwil hosts the Nordwestschweizer Einzelmeisterschaft (NEM). The championship consists of seven rounds played from August through November at the club’s Benkenstrasse premises. The strongest category uses a round-robin format, while the remaining sections use the Swiss System. All categories are registered for FIDE rating. The club has hosted NEM competitions in previous years as well. Moreover, its tournament archive documents decades of regional championships, junior competitions, simultaneous exhibitions, rapid events, blitz tournaments, family tournaments, and other chess activities. This organizational experience allows Schachclub Therwil to combine its own club program with events serving the wider Northwestern Switzerland chess community.

📜 History and Achievements

Schachclub Therwil was founded in 1973, during the international chess boom that followed the famous Fischer–Spassky World Championship match. Thirteen enthusiasts established the new club in Therwil. The organization grew steadily and soon became an established force within Northwestern Swiss chess. Youth chess became a priority in 1978, while the first Jugend-Team-Turnier followed in 1983. Competitive results also improved significantly during the following decade. One of the club’s greatest achievements came in 1988, when Therwil won the Swiss Team Cup. Another historic milestone followed in 1993, when the club earned promotion to the Nationalliga A, then the highest level of the Swiss Team Championship. The club has also produced several titled players. These include FIDE Masters Jörg Grünenwald, Clemens Werner, and Fabian Mäser, as well as Woman FIDE Master Evi Grünenwald-Reimer. Evi Grünenwald-Reimer became one of the club’s most successful players, winning a combined five Swiss girls’ and women’s championship titles. Schachclub Therwil celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023. More than half a century after its foundation, the organization continues to combine competitive chess, junior development, tournament organization, and a strong community atmosphere.
