♟️ About Schachclub Sursee

Schachclub Sursee is a long-established chess club based in Sursee, Canton of Lucerne, Switzerland. Founded in 1935, the organization celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2025. Today, the club welcomes beginners, recreational players, juniors, and experienced tournament competitors from Sursee and the wider Central Switzerland region. The club meets every Thursday from 19:30 at the music room of Schulanlage Zirkusplatz in central Sursee. Its program combines free play, structured training, internal tournaments, simultaneous exhibitions, team competitions, rapid and blitz chess, and social activities. Moreover, visitors and prospective members are welcome to attend club evenings and discover over-the-board chess without immediately committing to competition. Schachclub Sursee is affiliated with both the Innerschweizerischer Schachverband (ISV) and the Swiss Chess Federation (SSB). René Oehen currently serves as President. Under the present leadership, the organization has expanded its public tournament activity while maintaining a strong focus on community chess and accessible opportunities for players at different levels.

🏆 Swiss Rapid and Blitz Championships

Schachclub Sursee has developed significant experience in organizing major Swiss chess competitions. In 2025, the club hosted both the Swiss Rapid Championship and Swiss Blitz Championship at Businesspark Sursee. International Master Gabriel Gähwiler won both national titles during a successful championship weekend. The Swiss Chess Federation entrusted Sursee with the championships again in 2026. The Swiss Rapid Championship takes place on September 26, followed by the Swiss Blitz Championship on September 27. Both tournaments take place at Businesspark Sursee, Allee 1A, close to Sursee railway station. The rapid championship features nine Swiss-system rounds and receives international FIDE Rapid rating. The club therefore combines local chess activity with tournament organization at national championship level.

⚡ Soorser Blitzschachmeisterschaft

The best-known recurring public tournament organized by the club is the Soorser Blitzschachmeisterschaft. The event has grown rapidly in recent years. The sixth edition in 2023 attracted 142 players, while participation reached 176 players in 2025. According to the organizers, this made the tournament the largest blitz chess event in Switzerland that year. The 2025 field included grandmasters, international masters, strong Swiss competitors, juniors, seniors, and amateur players. Swiss Champion GM Sebastian Bogner eventually won the tournament after an Armageddon playoff against GM Joseph Gallagher. Schachclub Sursee organizes the 9th Soorser Blitzschachmeisterschaft on December 5, 2026 at Businesspark Sursee. The tournament once again features nine rounds and offers CHF 4,480 in cash prizes. In addition to the main prizes, the organizer provides separate awards for U16 juniors, players below 1800 Elo, and seniors over 61. Moreover, the event combines serious competition with a relaxed social atmosphere, refreshments, and numerous additional prizes.

🎓 Training and Club Competitions

Schachclub Sursee maintains a varied internal chess program throughout the year. The Club Championship is one of its main recurring competitions. In 2026, players compete over seven rounds, with each pairing consisting of two games. The club also organizes a knockout Club Cup. Training tournaments form another important part of the program. The club regularly organizes themed competitions designed to help players understand particular openings and positions. Furthermore, professional trainers and titled players occasionally lead dedicated training evenings. In 2026, for example, FIDE Master and FIDE Trainer Gregor Haag delivered a training session on how to learn and prepare a new opening. The club also hosted a simultaneous exhibition with International Master Roland Lötscher. This combination gives members opportunities to study chess as well as compete. Therefore, the club can serve players who want structured improvement without requiring everyone to pursue tournament chess at the same level.

🌱 Children’s Chess and Community Development

Children’s chess has become an increasingly important part of Schachclub Sursee’s activities. The club works with the Regionalbibliothek Sursee to provide regular chess afternoons for children aged nine and above. The sessions combine free chess, short instructional segments, simultaneous games against adults, and informal practical play. Interest in the program has been strong enough for the club to continue expanding it. By spring 2026, the initiative had already reached its fourth series. The autumn 2026 program includes monthly sessions at the Regional Library from September through December, followed by a children’s chess tournament in January 2027. Importantly, these sessions do not focus only on experienced young competitors. They provide a low-pressure introduction to chess for children who simply want to play, learn, and meet other young players.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Development

Schachclub Sursee participates actively in both Central Swiss and national team competitions. The organization fields several teams in the Schweizerische Gruppenmeisterschaft (SGM) as well as teams in the Innerschweizer Gruppenmeisterschaft (IGM). One of the club’s biggest sporting milestones came in 2024, when Sursee’s first team earned promotion to the 2. Bundesliga of the Swiss Group Championship for the first time in club history. The competitive structure continues to expand. In the 2026–27 SGM season, Schachclub Sursee fields four teams, allowing players of different strengths to gain regular league experience. Members also participate individually in Swiss championships and regional tournaments. In 2025, Sursee players won the Innerschweizer individual titles in Categories A and C at the Luzerner Open. Therefore, the club provides a pathway from recreational club chess to strong regional and national competition.

The anniversary reflected both its long history and the increasingly active period the organization has entered in recent years. A major sporting breakthrough occurred in 2024 when the first team reached the SGM 2nd Bundesliga. Meanwhile, the Soorser Blitzschachmeisterschaft developed into a major national blitz tournament. The club has also expanded into national championship organization, children’s chess, professional training sessions, live tournament coverage, and community programs. Another important development came with the move to the music room at Schulanlage Zirkusplatz. From January 2026, the bright and centrally located venue became the club’s regular Thursday playing location. Today, Schachclub Sursee combines a 90-year tradition with an ambitious modern program. Its activities range from casual weekly chess and children’s sessions to national championships and one of Switzerland’s largest blitz tournaments.
