♟️ About Schachclub Sursee
Schachclub Sursee is a long-established chess club based in Sursee, in the Swiss canton of Lucerne. The club celebrated its 90th anniversary in August 2025, which places its founding in 1935. It welcomes beginners, recreational players, and experienced competitors. Moreover, the club gives members the freedom to choose how seriously they wish to compete. Regular club evenings take place every Thursday from 7:30 p.m. Therefore, members can play casual games, prepare for competitions, or take part in the club’s scheduled activities. Schachclub Sursee belongs to both the Innerschweizerischer Schachverband and the Swiss Chess Federation. René Oehen currently serves as president, while Ramon Suter serves as vice president.
🏆 Competitions and Tournament Organization
The club runs a varied chess program throughout the year. Its internal competitions include the Club Championship, Club Cup, themed tournaments, Chess960 events, and seasonal blitz tournaments. In addition, Schachclub Sursee fields three teams in the Innerschweizer Gruppenmeisterschaft and participates in Swiss team competitions. The club achieved an important milestone when its first team earned promotion to the second Bundesliga of the Swiss Group Championship. Schachclub Sursee also organizes larger public events. Its best-known competition is the annual Soorser Blitzschachmeisterschaft, an open nine-round Swiss-system tournament. The 2025 edition attracted a record 176 participants, including grandmasters, international masters, juniors, seniors, and club players of different strengths. Furthermore, the club organized the 2025 Swiss Blitz and Rapid Championships and has hosted major events for the Central Swiss chess community.
🌱 Community and Junior Chess
Schachclub Sursee combines competitive chess with a strong social and community focus. The club encourages friendly interaction alongside serious play, so its activities remain accessible to players with different goals and experience levels. It also supports junior development through children’s chess sessions organized with the Regional Library of Sursee. These sessions introduce children to the rules, basic strategy, and practical play in a welcoming environment. Due to strong local interest, the program entered its fourth series in spring 2026. Additionally, the club organizes simultaneous exhibitions, open chess activities, Easter blitz events, outdoor chess, training sessions, and social gatherings. Its statutes define the promotion of chess through regular playing evenings, tournaments, matches, educational courses, and other events as the club’s central purpose. Through this broad program, Schachclub Sursee continues to support both competitive chess and community participation in the Sursee region.
