Schachclub Ortenburg 1894 e.V. (SC Ortenburg) is a chess club based in Ortenburg, Lower Bavaria, Germany. The club promotes competitive and recreational chess through league teams, internal championships, open tournaments, rapid chess, and a substantial youth program. Its regular club evening takes place every Friday from 7:00 PM at Wellnesshotel Zum Koch in Ortenburg, while separate youth training is held during the school term at the Rathaus in the center of Ortenburg. The club combines team competition with a varied tournament calendar. Its activities include the Werner-Obermeyer-Open, the Ortenburger Marktmeisterserie, the Clubturnier, youth rapid tournaments, and seasonal club events. Youth chess has become particularly important: the club’s latest published membership statistics recorded 106 members in 2025, including a significant number of children and teenagers. In July 2026, almost 50 young players took part in the 18th Ortenburger Jugendschachturnier. Manuel Schneider currently serves as First Chairman (1. Vorsitzender) and also supports the youth program as Second Youth Director. The club enjoyed an especially successful 2025–2026 league season, with its first team earning promotion from the Bezirksliga Ost to the Niederbayernliga. Meanwhile, tournament activity continues with the 20th Werner-Obermeyer-Open, scheduled for September 11–13, 2026, followed by the club’s five-round classical Clubturnier in October and November.

📜 History and Development

The club carries the founding year 1894 in its official name, reflecting a long chess tradition in Ortenburg. The present organization was re-established in 2005, and the club’s own membership records document its development continuously from that point. At the time of the 2005 restart, SC Ortenburg recorded 41 members. Membership subsequently increased substantially, reaching 106 members in 2025. Therefore, the modern club has developed both its adult competitive section and a sizeable youth base. An important figure in this revival was Werner Obermeyer, who worked for the club from its 2005 re-establishment and served in several important roles, including tournament director, treasurer, and press officer. After his death in October 2023, the club renamed its principal open tournament in his memory. Since 2024, the event has been known as the Werner-Obermeyer-Open.

♜ Team Chess and Club Competition

SC Ortenburg fields teams in the organized league structure of Lower Bavaria. During the 2025–2026 season, the first team competed in the Bezirksliga Ost, while the second team played in the Kreisklasse Ost. The first team produced a strong season and reached the top of the Bezirksliga Ost standings during the campaign. Its successful run ultimately secured the championship and promotion to the Niederbayernliga, which the club celebrated with its official championship event in July 2026. Alongside league chess, members can compete in the annual Clubturnier. The 2026 championship consists of five Swiss-system rounds with DWZ rating. The rounds are scheduled from October 2 to November 27, 2026, with a classical time control of 120 minutes for 40 moves followed by 30 minutes for the remainder.

🎓 Youth Chess and Rapid Events

Youth development forms a major part of the club’s current activities. Training takes place on school Fridays from 5:30 PM to approximately 6:30 PM at the Rathaus in Ortenburg. The club organized the 18th Ortenburger Jugendschachturnier on July 4, 2026, attracting almost 50 young players. Moreover, youth players regularly participate in tournaments elsewhere in Bavaria and neighboring regions. SC Ortenburg also runs the Ortenburger Marktmeisterserie, a rapid chess series designed for both club players and recreational players from the surrounding area. The second edition in 2026 consisted of five qualifying tournaments from February through April, followed by a knockout final on May 9. Hans-Peter Thanner won the 2026 series. The format uses 10 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move, making the competition accessible to players who prefer shorter games while maintaining a structured tournament environment.

🏆 Werner-Obermeyer-Open

The Werner-Obermeyer-Open is SC Ortenburg’s flagship tournament. The competition was previously known as the Ortenburger Open before being renamed in 2024 in memory of Werner Obermeyer. The 20th Werner-Obermeyer-Open is scheduled for September 11–13, 2026 at Wagners Hotel Ortenburg / Wellnesshotel Zum Koch, Vorderhainberg 8 in Ortenburg. The event will consist of five Swiss-system rounds and is limited to 160 participants. Players compete in three rating groups: A-Tournament for TWZ 2000 and above, B-Tournament for TWZ 1750–1999, and C-Tournament for players below 1750. All three sections are submitted for both FIDE Elo and German DWZ rating. The classical time control is 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the remainder, with a 30-second increment from move one. The published prize fund totals €2,800, including a €1,000 first prize in the A-Tournament. Max Obermeier serves as Tournament Director for the 2026 edition, while Manuel Schneider is the Chief Arbiter. The current participant list already includes several titled players, including GM Egor Krivoborodov, GM Oleg Korneev, and GM Leonid Milov.

🏛️ Organization and Club Life

Manuel Schneider leads the club as First Chairman. Johann Baumgartner serves as Second Chairman, while Christian Aigner is Treasurer and Hans Wiesinger is Secretary. Tournament activities are coordinated primarily by Max Obermeier, the club’s First Tournament Director, together with Sonja Obermeier, Second Tournament Director. Jürgen Wittig leads the youth section and also manages the club’s website. The regular Friday club evening combines free play, training, and tournament games. Consequently, SC Ortenburg provides activities for competitive league players, recreational adults, juniors, and tournament visitors while maintaining an active program throughout the year.
