♟️ About Schachclub ML Kastellaun e.V.

Schachclub ML Kastellaun e.V. (SC ML Kastellaun) is a chess club based in Kastellaun, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The present association was founded on February 18, 2019, but its competitive roots come from the former Spielgemeinschaft Mörsdorf/Lahr. The initials “ML” preserve that connection. The club belongs to Schachverband Rheinland and the wider Schachbund Rheinland-Pfalz structure. The club combines competitive team chess with a particularly strong commitment to youth development. Its current structure includes several adult and development teams, while roughly half of its registered membership consists of younger players. Training, school chess, club competition, youth tournaments, and rapid events form the core of its activities. Moreover, the club cooperates with schools in and around Kastellaun to introduce children to chess and guide stronger juniors toward federation competition. Andreas Englert is the current Chairman and principal organizational contact of SC ML Kastellaun. The 2025–2026 season produced an important competitive success: the first team won the 2. Rheinland-Pfalz-Liga Nord with 15 match points from eight matches and earned promotion. Consequently, SC ML Kastellaun will compete in the 1. Rheinland-Pfalz-Liga during the 2026–2027 season. The club is also preparing the 2nd Hunsrück Schnellschachopen, scheduled for September 26, 2026.

📜 Development of the Club

Before the present club was created, players from the area competed together as SG Mörsdorf/Lahr. The establishment of SC ML Kastellaun in 2019 created an independent organization centered more directly on Kastellaun while preserving the ML identity. The club expanded rapidly after its foundation. Youth development became one of its defining priorities, while additional teams allowed younger and less experienced members to gain competitive experience alongside stronger adult players. Current club records show a competitive roster headed by titled players such as FM Jan Boder and IM Sergey Shevchenko, together with experienced regional competitors. At the same time, junior players appear throughout the team structure rather than being separated entirely from adult league chess.

♜ Team Chess and the 2026 Promotion

SC ML Kastellaun maintains a deep team structure across the Rhineland-Palatinate and Rhein-Nahe league systems. This gives members opportunities ranging from upper regional competition to introductory team chess. The first team produced an outstanding 2025–2026 campaign in the 2. Rheinland-Pfalz-Liga Nord. Kastellaun finished first with 15:1 match points and 42.5 board points, well ahead of second-placed SV Koblenz 03/25 II. That championship secured promotion to the 1. Rheinland-Pfalz-Liga for 2026–2027. The new season will bring matches against clubs including Gau-Algesheim, Remagen-Sinzig, Lahnstein, Mainz, Landau, Trier, and other strong regional teams. Meanwhile, SC ML Kastellaun II competed in the Rheinlandliga during 2025–2026. Additional teams played in lower district competitions, ensuring that the club can offer regular league chess to players across a broad range of ratings.

🎓 Youth Chess and School Cooperation

Youth chess is one of the club’s most important activities. SC ML Kastellaun provides structured training for children and teenagers and actively supports participation in individual championships, youth Opens, team competitions, and higher-level regional events. In 2026, the club continues to offer Saturday-morning training for children from approximately six years of age at Haus Gehaichnis in Kastellaun. New participants can attend introductory sessions before deciding whether to join the club. School cooperation extends the club’s reach beyond its own membership. Its chess-development work has included partnerships with IGS Kastellaun, Grundschule Kastellaun, HJG Gymnasium Simmern, and other schools in the surrounding area. Club members have supported chess groups and school competitions, helping young players move from classroom chess into organized tournament play. This development pathway has already produced participation in Rhineland-Palatinate and German youth championships. In addition, Kastellaun teams have previously represented the club in German youth team competitions.

🏆 Hunsrück Tournament Activity

SC ML Kastellaun has developed a recurring tournament program centered on the Hunsrück region. One established project is the Hunsrück Jugendopen, which reached its 7th edition in September 2025. The youth tournament uses separate age classifications and provides young competitors with a full rapid-chess event. Earlier editions included prizes across several youth categories and live transmission from leading boards. The club has also added an open rapid tournament for players of different ages and strengths. The 2nd Hunsrück Schnellschachopen is scheduled for September 26, 2026 at the auditorium of IGS Kastellaun. Players will contest seven Swiss-system rounds at 10 minutes + 5 seconds per move. The tournament includes cash awards as well as dedicated prizes and trophies for younger players. By combining team leagues, youth development, school chess, and its own tournament series, SC ML Kastellaun has established an active chess program serving both Kastellaun and the wider Hunsrück region.
