♟️ About Schachclub Kirchberg
Schachclub Kirchberg is an active Swiss chess club based in Kirchberg, Canton of Bern, Switzerland. The club serves players from Kirchberg, Burgdorf, and the wider Emmental region. Its program combines competitive team chess, FIDE-rated tournaments, youth training, regular club evenings, and activities for new and experienced players. The club meets at Seniorenzentrum Emme on Eystrasse 8 in Kirchberg. Throughout the year, members take part in club evenings, junior sessions, Swiss team competitions, tournament weekends, and social activities. Moreover, the club welcomes adults who want to start playing organized over-the-board chess. Schachclub Kirchberg also maintains a particularly strong competitive profile. Its first team competes in the 1. Bundesliga of the Schweizerische Gruppenmeisterschaft (SGM), the highest level of that national team competition. At the same time, the club invests in junior development and organizes major open tournaments in both Kirchberg and nearby Burgdorf.🏆 Burgdorfer Stadthaus-Open
The best-known tournament organized by Schachclub Kirchberg is the Burgdorfer Stadthaus-Open. The club launched its Burgdorf weekend-open tradition in 2002, when the first edition attracted 53 players. International Master Ilmars Starostits won that inaugural tournament, while titled players, juniors, local competitors, sponsors, and regional officials all took part in the event. Over the following years, the competition developed into the established Burgdorfer Stadthaus-Open. It takes place at Hotel Stadthaus in Burgdorf and attracts players from Switzerland and abroad. The tournament uses a compact five-round classical format. Moreover, modern editions provide several rating sections, allowing strong tournament players, club competitors, juniors, and lower-rated players to compete under appropriate conditions. The 25th Burgdorfer Stadthaus-Open takes place from February 12–14, 2027. René Tanner serves as Tournament Director, while Schachclub Kirchberg manages the organization and player communication.♟️ Kirchberger Open
Schachclub Kirchberg also organizes the Kirchberger Open, a FIDE-rated classical tournament at its home venue. The Kirchberger Open 2026 takes place from September 4–6 at Wohn- und Pflegeheim St. Niklaus / Seniorenzentrum Emme in Kirchberg. The competition features five Swiss-system rounds with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. René Weber serves as Tournament Director, while René Tanner acts as Chief Arbiter. Therefore, two of the club’s long-standing organizers play key roles in delivering the event. The tournament offers cash prizes for the leading players and a dedicated U12 prize. In addition, the FIDE-rated format gives local players an opportunity to compete internationally without travelling far from the Emmental region.🌱 Youth Chess and Player Development
Youth chess forms a central part of Schachclub Kirchberg’s activities. The club offers regular chess training for children from six years of age. Sessions take place at Seniorenzentrum Emme and combine instruction, exercises, practical games, and preparation for competition. René Weber coordinates the published youth-chess contact and registration. The club keeps participation affordable so that children can experience organized chess within a structured local environment. Several players who later represented Kirchberg at senior team level originally developed through the club’s junior chess program. Therefore, the youth section provides a genuine pathway from introductory chess to serious national team competition. The club also participates in Swiss Junior Team Championship activities, giving young members experience representing Kirchberg against other chess organizations.♜ Swiss Team Competition
Schachclub Kirchberg competes actively in both major Swiss team structures. Its strongest squad plays in the 1. Bundesliga of the Schweizerische Gruppenmeisterschaft. The team includes experienced Swiss and international players and regularly competes against some of the strongest clubs in the country. The 2025–26 SGM season became particularly successful for Kirchberg. After five rounds, the club had drawn level with eventual champion Payerne at the top of the standings. Kirchberg remained in championship contention into the final stages of the season. The club eventually finished third in the 1. Bundesliga, behind Payerne and Winterthur. Nevertheless, the campaign confirmed Kirchberg’s position among Switzerland’s strongest SGM teams. In addition, the organization competes in the Schweizerische Mannschaftsmeisterschaft (SMM). Consequently, club members receive opportunities to play team chess across several national formats and levels.🤝 Club Life and Community
Schachclub Kirchberg maintains an active annual program beyond tournaments and league matches. Regular Friday club evenings give members opportunities to play friendly games, analyze positions, prepare for upcoming matches, and meet other players. Junior sessions frequently take place immediately before the adult club evening. The club also organizes meetings, seasonal activities, and social events. For example, the 2026 program includes a summer barbecue alongside the normal competitive calendar. This combination helps the organization maintain both its competitive strength and its community character. Strong tournament players can pursue high-level team chess, while juniors and recreational players can participate at their own pace.📜 Tournament Tradition and Development
Schachclub Kirchberg has developed a substantial tournament-organizing tradition over more than two decades. The first Burgdorf weekend tournament in 2002 provided the foundation for what later became the Stadthaus-Open. By 2022, the club had reached the tournament’s 20th edition, while later editions expanded from one open section to two and eventually three rating categories. Demand has often been strong. Recent editions have reached their participation limits, showing the tournament’s established position within the Swiss chess calendar. At the same time, the club continues developing chess in Kirchberg itself through the Kirchberger Open, youth instruction, team competition, and regular club evenings. Today, Schachclub Kirchberg combines local chess development with international-rated tournaments and high-level Swiss team competition. This balance gives the organization an important role in chess across Kirchberg, Burgdorf, and the wider Emmental region.
