Schachclub 1868 Bamberg e.V. is a historic chess club based in Bamberg, Bavaria, Germany. Twelve local chess enthusiasts founded the organization on February 12, 1868, at the Wilde Rose inn, making it one of Germany’s longest-established surviving chess clubs. Today, the club belongs to the Bayerischer Schachbund and Schachbezirk Oberfranken. Its principal current playing venue is the Klemens-Fink-Zentrum für Gehörlose on Babenbergerring. The club combines a distinguished competitive history with active modern chess. Its program includes regional team leagues, youth training, city and club championships, rapid and blitz competitions, open chess meetings, and the annual Bamberg Open. During the 2025–2026 season, Bamberg fielded five adult teams plus U16 and U20 teams. In addition, the club won the 2025–2026 Upper Franconian Team Rapid Championship in July 2026. Prof. Dr. Peter Krauseneck is the current Chairman and principal organizational contact of Schachclub 1868 Bamberg. Dr. Jürgen Röber serves as Tournament Director, while Dr. Heiko Plöhn leads the youth section. The first team finished third in the 2025–2026 Landesliga Nord and will continue in that division for 2026–2027. The club’s immediate major project is the 8th Bamberg Open, scheduled for September 2–6, 2026, with Peter Krauseneck serving as Tournament Director.

📜 More Than 150 Years of Chess History

Schachclub Bamberg has played an important role in German chess since the 19th century. The club was founded in 1868 by twelve players who established formal statutes and elected merchant Josef Lippmann as the first Chairman. Bamberg later became closely associated with several major figures in German chess. These included GM Lothar Schmid, GM Dr. Helmut Pfleger, and IM Hans-Günter Kestler. Schmid achieved international recognition not only as a Grandmaster but also as the arbiter of the 1972 World Championship match between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky. The club enjoyed its greatest team successes during the second half of the 20th century. Bamberg became German Team Champion in 1966, 1976, and 1977 and won the German Team Cup in 1983–1984. After the introduction of the single-division German Bundesliga in 1980, Bamberg remained in the top league for 14 seasons. These achievements form an important part of the club’s identity even as its current competitive program focuses primarily on Bavarian and Upper Franconian leagues.

♜ Team Chess and the 2025–2026 Season

The club maintained five adult teams during the 2025–2026 season. The first team competed in Landesliga Nord, while Bamberg II played in Regionalliga Nord-West. The third, fourth, and fifth teams participated at different levels of Upper Franconian competition. Bamberg I completed the Landesliga Nord season in third place with 12 match points, behind SK Kelheim and SC Bad Königshofen. The team recorded several convincing victories, including 7–1 against Klingenberg and 6–2 against Schwandorf. For 2026–2027, the first team remains in Landesliga Nord, while Bamberg II continues in Regionalliga Nord-West. Therefore, the club retains a broad competitive structure that provides league opportunities for both experienced players and developing members. Rapid chess produced another success on July 18, 2026, when Schachclub Bamberg won the Upper Franconian Team Rapid Championship 2025–2026 in Neustadt bei Coburg.

🎓 Youth Chess and Club Activity

Youth training takes place every Friday at the Klemens-Fink-Zentrum. Beginners train from 17:00 to 18:00, followed by the advanced junior group from 18:00 to 19:00. The general club evening begins afterward. Dr. Heiko Plöhn leads the youth section and also serves as captain of the first team. The club enters U16 and U20 teams in federation competition and organizes additional tournaments for developing players. A major part of its junior calendar is the Bamberger Jugend-Open, which reached its 34th edition during the 2025–2026 season. Moreover, the club provides regular competitive opportunities through city championships, club championships, rapid and blitz events. Community activity extends beyond formal tournaments. Wednesday meetings at Café Tambosi provide open chess for members and visitors, while other club initiatives combine chess with social and recreational activities.

🏆 8th Bamberg Open 2026

The 8th Bamberg Open is scheduled from September 2–6, 2026 at the Klemens-Fink-Zentrum für Gehörlose in Bamberg. The festival consists of A and B classical Opens plus a blitz tournament. Both main sections use a seven-round Swiss system and count for German and FIDE ratings. The classical time control is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the remainder of the game, with a 30-second increment from move one. The current A-Open field includes Grandmasters, International Masters, FIDE Masters, and players from several federations. Prof. Dr. Peter Krauseneck serves as Tournament Director, while Claus Kuhlemann is Chief Arbiter. Michael Stierhof and Peter Krauseneck are also part of the arbiting team. The tournament has a capacity of approximately 300 players and offers an announced prize fund of around €8,000. The separate blitz competition takes place on September 4. The Bamberg Open has become the club’s flagship modern tournament. It connects more than 150 years of Bamberg chess tradition with a large international-rated competition that attracts ambitious club players and titled competitors to the city.
