Schachbund Rheinland-Pfalz e.V. (SBRP) is the state chess federation for Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany and a member association of the Deutscher Schachbund. It coordinates organized chess across the entire federal state through three regional associations: Pfälzischer Schachbund, Schachbund Rheinhessen, and Schachverband Rheinland. The federation provides the framework connecting local clubs, regional competitions, and national German chess structures. SBRP organizes and supervises state championships, league and cup competitions, rapid and blitz chess, women’s chess, senior chess, training and coaching programs, rating administration, and other competitive activities. Youth chess operates through Schachjugend Rheinland-Pfalz, while specialist officials oversee individual and team competition, women’s chess, senior chess, training, data administration, and public communication. Moreover, the federation cooperates with local clubs that host major state tournaments such as the Rheinland-Pfalz Open. Achim Schmitt is the current President of Schachbund Rheinland-Pfalz and has held the position since November 2004. The current executive structure also includes regional Vice Presidents Michael Müller, Mandy Kalina, and Karsten Loof, while Ralf Henkel serves as Managing Director. The federation has maintained an extensive program in 2026, including the 16th Rheinland-Pfalz Open, women’s championships, the 23rd Rheinland-Pfalz Senioren Open, state rapid and blitz championships, team cup competition, coach education, and preparations for the 2026–2027 women’s and general league seasons.

📜 History and Regional Structure

The present Schachbund Rheinland-Pfalz developed through the consolidation of chess organizations across the state during the 1970s. An important step came in 1973, when the former Schachbund Pfalz adopted the Schachbund Rheinland-Pfalz name. The broader statewide organization was then established in April 1978 through cooperation between the chess structures of Pfalz and Rheinland. The regional framework was completed after the creation of the Schachbund Rheinhessen in October 1979. This three-part structure reflected the organization of sport within Rhineland-Palatinate and remains fundamental to the federation today. Rudolf Schwind played a central role in creating the statewide federation and served as its first President. Günther Müller succeeded him in 1981. Achim Schmitt became President on November 13, 2004 and continues to lead the organization in 2026.

♜ State Championships and Team Chess

Schachbund Rheinland-Pfalz coordinates competition above the level of its three regional associations. Its responsibilities include state team leagues, the Rheinland-Pfalz Team Cup, individual championships, and qualification pathways toward German national events. Norbert Kugel serves as State Tournament Director for team chess, while Florian Best oversees individual competition. The federation also maintains dedicated competitive structures for women. Dr. Sanja Perović-Ottstadt serves as Women’s Chess Officer, and the Frauen-Rheinland-Pfalz-Liga 2026–2027 continues as a four-player team competition for women registered with SBRP clubs. Rapid and blitz chess form another important part of the calendar. The 2026 state championship weekend includes the Rheinland-Pfalz Rapid Individual Championship on August 29 and the Blitz Individual Championship on August 30, together with separate women’s rapid and blitz championships.

🏆 Rheinland-Pfalz Open

The Rheinland-Pfalz Open serves as the federation’s principal open classical competition and official state individual championship. The 16th Rheinland-Pfalz Open took place from June 4–7, 2026 at the Festhalle Heimbach-Weis in Neuwied. Schachbund Rheinland-Pfalz organized the championship, while SC Heimbach-Weis/Neuwied served as the local host. The tournament used a seven-round classical Swiss format and offered more than €4,000 in prizes. International players could compete for the overall Open title, while eligible SBRP members simultaneously contested the Rheinland-Pfalz championship. GM Alexander Bagrationi won the overall 2026 tournament. IM Lukas Winterberg of SC Heimbach-Weis/Neuwied became the 2026 Rheinland-Pfalz Champion. The federation has already begun preparations for the 2027 Rheinland-Pfalz Open, continuing the tournament’s role as a central annual championship for players throughout the state.

👑 Senior, Women’s and Development Programs

Senior chess has developed into another major part of the federation’s calendar. The 23rd Rheinland-Pfalz Senioren Open took place from August 18–26, 2026 at Hotel Glockenspitze in Altenkirchen. The tournament attracted 94 players from Germany and several other European federations. IM Dieter Pirrot won the overall competition with 7.5 points from nine rounds. IM Klaus-Jürgen Schulz finished second and became the 2026 Rheinland-Pfalz Senior Champion, while George Bruziks won the state Nestoren title. Women’s chess also maintains a dedicated championship structure. The 2026 Rheinland-Pfalz Women’s Individual Championship took place in Eisenberg in June, followed by state women’s rapid and blitz championships in August. In addition, SBRP invests in technical development. Its 2026 program includes a B-Trainer qualification course, while Schachjugend Rheinland-Pfalz coordinates junior championships, youth Opens, training, and pathways toward German youth competitions.
