♟️ About Schach Lüdenscheid e.V.

Schach Lüdenscheid e.V. is a chess club based in Lüdenscheid, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The present organization was founded in 2025, following the dissolution of the former Schach-Gemeinschaft Lüdenscheid at the end of 2024. It is registered within the Schachbund Nordrhein-Westfalen and restores organized club chess to a city whose documented chess tradition reaches back to 1925. The club meets at the Turnhalle Wermecker Grund in Lüdenscheid. The new club focuses on rebuilding both adult and youth chess in the city. Friday is the principal club day, with youth training from 16:00 to 17:30 and adult chess from 18:00 to 21:00. Beginners, recreational players, experienced competitors, and families are all part of the club’s target community. Moreover, Schach Lüdenscheid maintains an extensive tournament calendar covering competitions in Sauerland, South Westphalia, North Rhine-Westphalia, and the wider German chess system. Frank Wollenweber is the current Chairman and principal organizational contact of Schach Lüdenscheid e.V., while Laura Mirtsch serves as Deputy Chair. The German federation directory currently records 19 registered members, including a substantial junior group. After establishing its regular training structure during 2025–2026, the club is now preparing one of its first major independent events: the Offene Lüdenscheider Stadtmeisterschaft 2026, scheduled for September 25–27 at PHÄNOMENTA Lüdenscheid.

📜 Chess Tradition and the New Club

Organized chess in Lüdenscheid has a history extending back more than a century. The first documented local organization, Schachfreunde Lüdenscheid, was founded on July 25, 1925. Several chess organizations later operated in the city, and in 1945 three of them combined to form Schachvereinigung Lüdenscheid. The local structure evolved over subsequent decades into Schach-Gemeinschaft Lüdenscheid. However, that organization decided to dissolve in 2024. On December 9, 2024, it was formally removed from the Schachbund Nordrhein-Westfalen and Landessportbund NRW structures, creating the first interruption in organized club chess in Lüdenscheid for almost 100 years. The interruption proved short. Frank Wollenweber and other local players created Schach Lüdenscheid e.V. in 2025 as a new independent organization rather than simply continuing the former club legally. The Deutscher Schachbund database consequently lists 2025 as its official foundation year.

🎓 Youth Chess and Weekly Training

Youth development has been part of the new club’s concept from the beginning. Children and teenagers meet every Friday afternoon at the Turnhalle Wermecker Grund before the adult club session. The current federation membership data already show players in the U14 and U18 age ranges. Therefore, junior chess represents a significant proportion of the young organization’s membership rather than a secondary activity. Training resumes on September 4, 2026 after the club’s August summer break. The club aims to provide an accessible route from learning the rules and casual chess toward tournaments and federation competition. Adult members meet immediately afterward. These sessions combine training, practice games, tournament preparation, and social chess. New visitors can therefore experience the club before moving into formal competitive play.

♜ Competitive Development

Schach Lüdenscheid is building its competitive structure within the Schachbezirk Sauerland and the wider South Westphalia and NRW chess system. The club’s current calendar incorporates district and regional league dates, cup competitions, youth events, and numerous open tournaments. This gives members access to tournament information beyond the activities held directly in Lüdenscheid. As a newly established organization, the club is still developing the extensive team structure that older regional clubs maintain. However, its affiliation with Schachbund Nordrhein-Westfalen and its growing membership provide the framework for future league participation. The club also uses its website as a regional chess calendar, helping members identify tournaments throughout NRW and Germany while encouraging greater over-the-board participation.

🏆 Offene Lüdenscheider Stadtmeisterschaft 2026

The Offene Lüdenscheider Stadtmeisterschaft 2026 is scheduled from September 25–27, 2026 at PHÄNOMENTA Lüdenscheid. Players will contest five Swiss-system rounds. The classical time control gives each player 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 15 minutes for the remainder of the game, with a 30-second increment from move one. The tournament will be submitted for German DWZ rating and is open to club players, tournament competitors, and recreational players. Therefore, participation is not restricted to members of a chess federation. Only players who live in Lüdenscheid or belong to Schach Lüdenscheid e.V. can receive the official Lüdenscheid City Champion title. However, all participants remain eligible for the tournament prizes. The first round begins on Friday evening, followed by two rounds on Saturday and two on Sunday. The championship represents an important milestone for the new club because it restores an open city championship to Lüdenscheid shortly after the re-establishment of organized club chess.
