Scacchi Famiglia Legnanese

♟️ Club Identity

A.S.D. Scacchi Famiglia Legnanese is a chess association in Legnano, Lombardy, Italy. The club continues the chess tradition of the Famiglia Legnanese chess group, founded in 1982 by Alberto Meraviglia and Giovanni Longo. From 2023, Denis Soncin led a renewed organizational phase and helped formalize the A.S.D. structure with affiliation to the Italian Chess Federation. The club meets at Villa Jucker on Via Giacomo Matteotti, where players can join Friday evening chess, training, tournaments, and community activity. In addition, the association welcomes members, visitors, juniors, adult players, and chess fans who want regular over-the-board play near Milan. Its long local history, federation activity, and open club culture make it a strong chess reference point for Legnano and the surrounding area.

🏆 Tournament Activity

A.S.D. Scacchi Famiglia Legnanese organizes San Giorgio su Legnano Scacchi, a historic chess tournament with nearly forty editions. The 37th edition takes place from September 25 to 27, 2026, at Centro Parrocchiale on Via Roma 5 in San Giorgio su Legnano. The event includes Open FIDE A, Open FIDE B Over 50, and Open FIDE C sections. It uses five Swiss-system rounds and a classical 90 minutes plus 30 seconds time control. The club also connects its identity with one of the most famous moments in Italian tournament chess: the 1995 San Giorgio record event, which reached 926 participants and included Anatoly Karpov. Beyond this flagship event, the club organizes federal tournaments, social tournaments, city championship activity, and other competitive events for different levels.

🌱 Youth Chess and School Activity

A.S.D. Scacchi Famiglia Legnanese supports youth chess, school chess, and community development through courses, junior activity, and public chess promotion. Its program includes tournaments, courses for adults and children, school collaboration, youth competition, and promotional events. During the 2025/2026 school year, the association brought chess directly into local primary schools and reached more than 300 children during class time. This work gives young players a friendly first step into chess and helps families discover the club environment. In addition, the club has built strong youth credentials through Italian junior titles, team results, and active school projects. Its 2025 women’s team, “The Woman in Red,” also added a new participation pathway. As a result, the club combines tradition, education, competition, and community chess in one active organizer profile.
