♟️ About Šahovski klub Dubrovnik
Šahovski klub Dubrovnik is a historic chess club based in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Founded in 1933, the club has maintained the city’s organized chess tradition for more than 90 years. It brings together players from different generations while promoting competitive chess, education, sportsmanship, and community participation. Moreover, the club aims to serve as a central meeting point for chess in Dubrovnik and the wider Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Its activities include league participation, individual competitions, training sessions, internal events, and public chess initiatives. The club also preserves an important part of the city’s sporting heritage. For example, the Dubrovnik City Chess Championship has produced a documented succession of city champions since 1934. Vlaho Zlošilo currently represents the organization as its president.
🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Activities
The club organizes an extensive program of classical, rapid, and blitz tournaments throughout the year. Its best-known events include Open Dubrovnik and Dubrovnik Advent Open, which attract players from Croatia and other countries. In addition, Šahovski klub Dubrovnik runs the Dubrovnik City Championship, seasonal standard tournaments, monthly rapid events, holiday blitz competitions, and county championships for junior and cadet players. The club also enters senior, junior, and youth teams in Croatian league competitions. Therefore, members can progress from local club events to regional and national competition within the same organization. The 2026 Open Dubrovnik marked the tournament’s 16th edition, while the fourth Dubrovnik Advent Open was scheduled as an international FIDE-rated competition in December 2026.
🌱 Chess Education and Youth Development
Youth chess plays a central role in the club’s long-term work. Its chess school welcomes children, young people, beginners, and developing competitors. Coaches divide participants into three groups according to their knowledge and experience. As a result, new players can learn the rules and basic principles, while advanced students prepare for tournaments and team competitions. The club also cooperates with schools, families, local institutions, and other sporting organizations to make chess more accessible. Furthermore, its young members regularly compete in city, county, and Croatian championships. In 2026, club member Matea Račević won a Croatian individual cadet title with a perfect score, demonstrating the results of the club’s structured work with emerging players. Through training, regular competition, and community engagement, Šahovski klub Dubrovnik continues to develop new generations of players while strengthening chess throughout southern Croatia.
