Šachový klub Jeseník, z.s. is a long-established chess club and tournament organizer based in Jeseník, Olomouc Region, Czech Republic. Founded in 1950, the organization has maintained continuous chess activity for more than 75 years. Today, it brings together more than 100 active members ranging from young children to senior players. The club combines recreational chess with structured training, individual competition, team championships, youth development, and major tournament organization. Moreover, members meet regularly at the club’s own chess premises in central Jeseník. Players can participate whether they are beginners, ambitious juniors, experienced club competitors, or adults who primarily enjoy chess as a social activity. Pavel Koriťák serves as Club President, statutory representative, and one of the organization’s principal tournament directors. Under the current structure, Šachový klub Jeseník maintains an active year-round calendar while also organizing two major international chess festivals. In addition, its strong youth program and regional activities make the club an important center for chess in the Jeseník area.

🏆 JESENÍK OPEN

The flagship event of Šachový klub Jeseník is the JESENÍK OPEN, an international chess festival organized regularly since 1991. The festival takes place during the summer in Jeseník, a spa town surrounded by the Jeseníky Mountains. Over several decades, the event has developed into a recognizable fixture on the Czech tournament calendar. Moreover, its combination of competitive chess and the Priessnitz Spa environment attracts both Czech and international players. The 36th JESENÍK OPEN took place from August 14–23, 2026 at the Congress Hall of Priessnitz Spa. The venue can accommodate approximately 220 participants. The festival includes two main classical groups, a rapid tournament, a blitz tournament, and additional chess activities. In 2026, the accompanying program also featured a simultaneous and blindfold chess exhibition. Both classical sections run over nine rounds and receive national and international rating where applicable. Furthermore, the organizer provides category prizes for juniors, women, seniors, and other participant groups.

❄️ XMAS JESENÍK OPEN

Šachový klub Jeseník also organizes the XMAS JESENÍK OPEN, an international festival held between Christmas and New Year. The winter event provides another opportunity for players to compete in Jeseník outside the main summer festival. Its program combines a nine-round classical tournament with rapid and blitz side events. The festival welcomes players of all ages and playing strengths. Moreover, all principal chess events are designed for FIDE rating, while live boards allow spectators and supporters to follow games online. The fourth XMAS JESENÍK OPEN took place in December 2025, confirming that the event has become a recurring part of the club’s annual program. Together, JESENÍK OPEN and XMAS JESENÍK OPEN give Šachový klub Jeseník an unusually extensive tournament-organizing role for a regional chess club.

🎓 Youth Chess and Training

Youth development is one of the strongest areas of Šachový klub Jeseník. The club provides several training sessions during the week for children and developing players. The current program includes dedicated youth training on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Meanwhile, Wednesdays provide training for adults and advanced players. Therefore, members can progress through different levels while remaining within the same club environment. The club’s youth players compete both individually and as teams. Most notably, the ŠK Jeseník youth team competes in the Czech 1st Youth League. The organization also participates actively in regional youth events. In February 2025, for example, Šachový klub Jeseník organized a Grand Prix tournament for children and juniors together with the local secondary technical school. The competition also served as a regional rapid championship for younger age categories. In January 2026, Jeseník sent 36 young players across eight school teams to the regional school team championship in Olomouc. Consequently, the club’s youth activity extends beyond its own members and supports chess development in local schools.

Šachový klub Jeseník participates in both individual and team competitions within the Czech chess structure. Members represent the club in regional and national events, while the organization maintains regular internal and community activities throughout the season. These include local tournaments, regional championships, rapid events, memorial tournaments, and summer competitions. The club’s 2026 program includes the Memorial Vladimíra Ondruška, regional summer tournaments, junior Grand Prix events, and the international JESENÍK OPEN festival. In addition, the club organizes activities outside strictly rated competition. These events help maintain a strong social community around chess and give less experienced members an accessible route into tournament play.

📜 History and Tradition

The origins of Šachový klub Jeseník date to 1950. Contemporary newspaper records documented the establishment of the club that year and named its first group of officials. During its early history, the club operated under several sporting structures. At one stage, Jeseník players competed under Lokomotiva Dolní Lipová, which helped solve travel difficulties by connecting the team with the railway sports system. The club also used many different playing venues over the decades. These included hotels, public buildings, a theatre, and the local sports hall. Eventually, members converted part of a former bowling facility into a permanent chess clubhouse. The organization continues to use its own premises in central Jeseník today. Several generations of players and volunteers have contributed to the club’s development. Among the important historical figures was Svatopluk Hastík, whose name is now associated with the rapid tournament held during JESENÍK OPEN. The club has also demonstrated considerable resilience. Severe flooding affected the Jeseník region in September 2024, including facilities around the chess clubhouse. However, members and supporters restored the outdoor sports area during 2025 with assistance from community partners. Today, Šachový klub Jeseník combines more than seven decades of history with a modern program of youth training, team competition, online game broadcasts, international festivals, and community chess.
