♟️ About PLUSCITY Grand Prix

PLUSCITY Grand Prix is a recurring international rapid and blitz chess festival held at PlusCity in Pasching, near Linz, Austria. The event combines high-level competitive chess with a large public venue and brings together titled professionals, club players, amateurs, national championship contenders, and international teams. Its organizational structure brings together the Upper Austrian Chess Federation (OÖ Schachverband), the Österreichischer Schachförderverein (ÖSFV), and Grandmaster Event Management GmbH. Unlike a traditional tournament held in a closed playing hall, the Grand Prix stages major parts of its program inside the PlusCity shopping center. As a result, chess becomes visible to thousands of visitors, spectators, and media representatives during the event. This public-facing format has become one of the defining features of the festival and helps connect competitive chess with a wider audience. The organizational team includes experienced figures from Austrian and international chess. Michael Stöttinger, President of the Austrian Chess Federation, serves as Event Director. Kons. IA Günter Mitterhuemer, President of the Upper Austrian Chess Federation, serves as Tournament Director. In addition, IA Dr. Ivan Syrovy, Chairman of the FIDE Arbiters’ Commission, leads the arbiting team as Chief Arbiter.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

The PLUSCITY Grand Prix focuses on rapid and blitz chess and normally combines four major competitions over consecutive days. The program includes an individual Rapid tournament, an individual Blitz tournament, an Open Austrian Team Blitz Championship, and an Open Austrian Team Rapid Championship. Individual tournaments are designed for broad participation and are open to chess players without invitation requirements. Meanwhile, the team competitions welcome Austrian clubs, international clubs, and mixed or fantasy teams under the published regulations. This structure allows the festival to combine official Austrian championship competition with a genuinely international open-event atmosphere. The event has grown significantly through successive editions. In the 2026 festival, more than 750 participants from 28 nations played a combined 8,730 rapid and blitz games. Following that record participation, the organizers expanded the playing area for the next edition while introducing a defined capacity to keep tournament operations manageable. The PLUSCITY Grand Prix 2027 takes place from May 27–30, 2027. Individual Rapid opens the festival on May 27, followed by Individual Blitz on May 28. Team Blitz takes place on May 29, while Team Rapid concludes the program on May 30. The organizers have announced an overall €80,000 prize fund for the festival.

🌍 International Chess & Public Engagement

International participation is a central part of the PLUSCITY Grand Prix concept. Players from many federations compete alongside Austrian club members and national championship participants. Therefore, the festival combines several levels of competitive chess within the same venue, from ambitious amateur players to internationally titled competitors. The PlusCity location also creates unusual playing conditions. On days when the shopping center is open, players compete with spectators and media activity nearby. The organizers make these conditions clear in advance and use the setting deliberately to promote chess in public rather than separating the competition from everyday visitors. High-profile players have become an important part of the event’s international visibility. The 2027 edition includes former World Champion Viswanathan Anand, who is scheduled to participate across all four competitions and take part in activities connected with young chess players. The combination of elite participation and open entry remains one of the festival’s most distinctive characteristics.

📚 History & Development

The modern PlusCity Grand Prix has developed into an annual fixture in the Austrian rapid and blitz calendar. Successive editions in 2025, 2026, and 2027 have continued the same core concept: large open individual tournaments, team championships, substantial prize funds, and competition inside the PlusCity complex. Over time, the festival has also strengthened its role within official Austrian chess. The individual and team events include Austrian championship titles, while the competitions operate under Austrian Chess Federation and FIDE regulations. At the same time, international players and teams remain an integral part of the tournament field. Grandmaster Event Management GmbH provides the central contact and event-management infrastructure, while the Upper Austrian Chess Federation and ÖSFV contribute sporting and administrative support. This cooperation allows the Grand Prix to combine federation-level championship requirements with the operational demands of a large international chess festival.
