♟️ About Ostrava Chess z.s.

Ostrava Chess z.s. is a chess association based in Ostrava-Polanka nad Odrou, Czech Republic, established in 2006. Rather than operating primarily as a conventional team chess club, the association concentrates on organizing tournaments and promoting competitive chess across Ostrava and the wider Moravian-Silesian Region. Its activities range from major international classical events to rapid tournaments, school championships, simultaneous exhibitions, and other public chess projects. The association is best known for organizing the Ostravský koník, an established international chess festival that has become one of the major annual chess events in Moravia. Ostrava Chess also coordinates the Rapid Tour Ostravský koník, a series of rapid tournaments held in Ostrava and surrounding municipalities, as well as the OSTRAVA K-TRIO OPEN. Youth chess forms another important part of its program through the Ostravský koníček, the championship for pupils from schools in Ostrava and the surrounding district. Over the years, its events have also incorporated Czech national championships, title-norm opportunities, blitz, Chess960, simultaneous exhibitions, and live broadcasts. Mgr. Marek Jelínek serves as Chairman of Ostrava Chess z.s. and is the association’s principal operational contact. He also holds the FIDE International Organizer title and directs the Ostravský koník festival and other Ostrava Chess events. The organization maintained an extensive program in 2026, beginning with its January–April Rapid Tour and culminating in the Ostravský koník 2026 from May 2–10. Ukrainian Grandmaster Anton Korobov won the main FIDE Open A and later also won the festival’s blitz tournament.

📜 Development and Tournament Organization

Ostrava Chess was established in December 2006 and has developed around the organization of major chess events rather than a traditional club league structure. Its principal project, Ostravský koník, already has a long history in Ostrava. During its development, the festival has hosted Czech national championships, strong international fields, grandmaster events, and numerous FIDE title-norm performances. The organization has also worked consistently with the City of Ostrava. Municipal support continued in both 2025 and 2026, with the city backing the international Ostravský koník festival as a significant sporting event. Since 2023, the festival’s principal playing venue has been Pavilion A at the Černá louka Exhibition Centre, providing substantially more space than the festival’s former venue.

🌟 Ostravský koník

The Ostravský koník is the flagship project of Ostrava Chess. The 2026 edition took place from May 2–10 at Pavilion A of the Černá louka Exhibition Centre. The festival featured three nine-round classical sections: FIDE Open A, FIDE Open B, and FIDE Open C. The total advertised prize fund across the festival reached CZK 280,000, with CZK 40,000 allocated to the winner of Open A. GM Anton Korobov of Ukraine won FIDE Open A with 7/9, finishing ahead of Polish IM Mieszko Miś on tiebreak. Indian IM Imran Md finished third with 6.5 points. In the other classical sections, Zofia Frej of Poland won Open B, while Michał Nisztuk, also representing Poland, took first place in Open C. The festival also included a Chess960 tournament, won by IM Vojtěch Zwardoń, and an 11-round blitz tournament. Korobov completed a successful week by winning the blitz competition ahead of IM Imran Md and IM Valentyn Prokofiev.

⚡ Rapid Tour Ostravský koník

Before the main festival, Ostrava Chess coordinates the Rapid Tour Ostravský koník, which connects several tournaments across Ostrava and neighboring municipalities. The 2026 tour ran from January 3 to April 25. Events were staged in locations including Bílovec, Ostrava-Hrabůvka, Rychvald, Havířov, Šenov, and Bohuslavice, while the planned Petřvald tournament was cancelled. Participation was substantial. The Bílovec event attracted 184 players, Ostrava-Hrabůvka had 153, Rychvald welcomed 124, and the final tournament in Bohuslavice attracted 154 players. The series also rewards regular participation. Leading players in several rating categories earn free entry to the main Ostravský koník FIDE Opens.

🎓 School and Community Chess

Ostrava Chess also uses its festival to promote chess among children. The Ostravský koníček 2026, held on May 7, served as the chess championship for pupils attending schools in Ostrava and the surrounding district. The tournament was divided into three age groups covering children from the first years of primary school through the ninth grade. Players competed over seven rapid rounds, and participation was free. In addition, the 2026 festival program included simultaneous exhibitions by Czech grandmasters Pavel Šimáček and Robert Cvek. These public events offered players an opportunity to win free entry to the main festival tournaments. The 2026 blitz tournament was also dedicated to the memory of IM Lukáš Klíma, a long-time figure associated with Ostravský koník who had provided commentary, simultaneous exhibitions, and other contributions to the festival since 2007.
