NTG Sjakklubb is a Norwegian chess organizer based at NTG Bærum in Bekkestua, Norway. The club is closely connected with the chess environment at Norges Toppidrettsgymnas, commonly known as NTG Sjakk. This environment combines serious competitive chess, player development, education, and regular tournament activity. The chess program at NTG has become one of the strongest talent-development environments in Norwegian chess. It gives ambitious young players the opportunity to combine extensive chess training with secondary education. Moreover, students work on opening preparation, middlegame strategy, endgames, game analysis, tournament preparation, and the psychological aspects of competitive chess. NTG’s chess environment also reaches beyond elite training. It cooperates with chess clubs and the Norwegian Chess Federation, while related programs support children, juniors, adult players, and tournament organizers. Consequently, the Bekkestua venue has developed into an important meeting point for both high-level chess training and regular competitive events.

🏆 Tournaments and Chess Activities

NTG Sjakklubb regularly organizes Grand Prix tournaments at NTG Bærum, particularly rapid and blitz events. These tournaments attract juniors, club players, titled players, and other competitors from across the Oslo and Bærum chess communities. The recurring NTG Lyn-GP series provides FIDE-rated blitz competition. Players compete in fast-paced tournaments that also form part of the Norges Grand Prix circuit. In addition, the NTG chess environment hosts rapid tournaments and other competitive events throughout the season. The NTG Lyn-GP December 2026 takes place on December 12, 2026, at NTG in Bekkestua. Grand Prix competitions at its Bekkestua premises date back more than two decades. 🎓 Elite Chess Training and Player Development

The NTG chess program began in 1998 under the leadership of Grandmaster Simen Agdestein. Its objective goes beyond producing stronger players. Students also learn how to teach chess, organize tournaments, and contribute to the broader Norwegian chess community. That approach has produced exceptional results. For the 2026–27 school year, NTG reports 14 chess students. Furthermore, 13 of Norway’s 19 grandmasters have a background at NTG. Among the program’s best-known former students are Magnus Carlsen, Aryan Tari, Jon Ludvig Hammer, Johan-Sebastian Christiansen, Johan Salomon, Lars Oskar Hauge, and Benjamin Arvola. Many international masters and FIDE masters have also developed through the program. The combination of education, intensive training, tournament participation, and practical chess work has therefore made NTG an influential part of Norway’s chess-development system.

📜 History and Achievements

NTG established its dedicated chess program in 1998, with Simen Agdestein playing a central role from the beginning. The original curriculum treated chess as a serious elite-sport discipline and covered technical chess skills, psychology, training methods, preparation, and competitive development. Since then, approximately 150 students have passed through the chess program. Dozens have achieved international titles, while several have reached grandmaster level. Most notably, former NTG student Magnus Carlsen went on to become World Chess Champion and the highest-rated player in chess history. NTG also maintains close cooperation with Norges Sjakkforbund and local chess organizations. Meanwhile, the broader chess environment around NTG supports junior programs, school chess, tournaments, coaching, and talent development. Through this combination of elite training and grassroots activity, NTG continues to play a significant role in Norwegian chess. Its regular Grand Prix tournaments at Bekkestua provide another connection between the training environment and Norway’s wider competitive chess community.
