Nagoya Chess Club (名古屋チェスクラブ) is a registered chess organization based in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. It is recognized by the Japan Chess Federation (JCF) and provides regular opportunities for officially rated competition, casual play, and chess development in central Japan. Club meetings are normally held two or three Sundays each month, with JCF-rated standard games alongside practice games, blitz, and activities for players who are new to organized chess. The club has a long competitive tradition. Its official tournament archive records Nagoya Open champions dating to 1970 and also preserves results from the Aichi Championship, Tokai Open, Chubu events, rapid tournaments, blitz, and Chess960. This long record distinguishes the club from a newly created tournament organizer. Nagoya Chess Club has provided recurring competitive chess in the region across several generations while adapting its calendar to modern JCF and FIDE rating requirements.

🏆 2026 Tournament Activity

The club opened its major 2026 tournament program with the Tokai Open, held on January 11–12 at Higashi Sakura Kaikan. The five-round Swiss used a classical time control of 60 minutes plus 30 seconds per move and was submitted for both FIDE and Japanese national rating. Hiroshi Fujisawa served as Tournament Director, while Takahiro Horie was Chief Arbiter. On March 22, the club organized the Aichi Chess Championship 2026, one of the official regional qualification tournaments for the Japan Chess Championship. The Chubu Rapid Open followed on May 31 at Nagoya City Youth Cultural Center Artpia Hall. Players competed over five rounds at 25 minutes plus 10 seconds per move, with results submitted for both FIDE Rapid and national rating. Nagoya Chess Club also organized the 11th NCC Super Rapid and 8th NCC Chess960 Tournament on July 20. Teo Vallribera won the Super Rapid, while Kazufumi Yoshizawa won the Chess960 competition.

🌟 Nagoya Open 2026

The Nagoya Open is one of the club’s principal recurring tournaments. The 2026 edition will take place on September 20–21 at Higashi Sakura Kaikan in central Nagoya. The tournament will use a six-round Swiss system with a time control of 45 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. It is an official Japan Chess Federation Standard-rated competition. The published prize fund totals ¥200,000. The Open winner receives ¥80,000, with additional prizes for second and third place and separate A, B, and C rating classes. Hiroshi Fujisawa serves as Tournament Director, while Takahiro Horie is the arbiter and registration contact. Participation is limited to JCF members, and the published capacity is 50 players.

🎓 Club Meetings and Beginner Chess

Regular club meetings remain an important part of Nagoya Chess Club’s activity. During autumn 2026, meetings are scheduled at Amano Performing Arts Center Nagoya. Official games normally use a 40-minute plus 30-second increment time control. Players may participate in individual rounds rather than a complete tournament, while practice games and blitz are also available.
