♟️ About Morvan Échecs
Morvan Échecs is a chess club based in Brassy, in the Nièvre department of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France. The club affiliates with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) under code E58010. It serves players across the Morvan through regular club sessions, youth chess, regional team competition, school events, and FIDE-rated tournaments. The association was officially created on May 11, 2023. Its stated purpose is to promote chess instruction and practice while emphasizing the game’s social and convivial character. Since its creation, Morvan Échecs has developed activities in both Brassy and Lormes and has quickly established several recurring competitions in the Nièvre chess calendar. Antoine Auzou serves as President of Morvan Échecs. He is also directly involved in tournament administration and currently acts as organizer of the club’s principal competitions. Meanwhile, Luc Martinez serves as another official club contact and regularly contributes to tournament organization and arbitration. In 2026, the FFE records 18 Licence A and 46 Licence B members at Morvan Échecs.🏆 Trophée du Morvan and Tournament Activity
Morvan Échecs has built an active tournament program since its foundation. Its principal summer event is the Open de Brassy – Trophée du Morvan, which began in 2024 and reached its third edition in 2026. The 2026 festival took place on July 18–19 in Brassy. It combined separate FIDE-rated blitz and rapid tournaments. Moreover, both competitions carried additional significance because they determined the Nièvre Blitz Champion and Nièvre Rapid Champion among eligible players. Morvan Échecs organizes the Trophée du Morvan in partnership with the Comité Départemental du Jeu d’Échecs de la Nièvre (CDJE58). Antoine Auzou serves as organizer, while the club provides direct registration and player support. In addition, the club works with La Dame Blanche – Nevers and CDJE58 on the Nièvre Individual Championship. The 2025/26 championship used tournament stages in Nevers and Brassy. Therefore, Morvan Échecs contributes directly to the department’s classical championship structure as well as its rapid and blitz titles.🌳 Open International d’Échecs du Morvan
In 2026, the club expands its tournament program with the 1er Open International d’Échecs du Morvan – Trophée du Parc. The event takes place from October 31 to November 1 at the Maison du Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan in Saint-Brisson. Morvan Échecs organizes the tournament in partnership with CDJE58 and in collaboration with the Parc naturel régional du Morvan. The competition receives both FFE and FIDE recognition and uses five classical Swiss-system rounds. The tournament represents an important expansion beyond the club’s established Brassy competitions. Instead of limiting its activities to one municipality, Morvan Échecs uses the event to connect chess with the wider Morvan territory. Moreover, the organizer integrates the regional setting into the player experience. The official tournament information directs visiting competitors toward accommodation throughout the Parc du Morvan. This approach combines competitive chess with a destination-based event in the heart of the regional natural park.🎓 Youth Chess and School Championships
Youth development forms an important part of the club’s weekly activity. The FFE currently lists a dedicated Tuesday session from 18:00 to 19:00 for young players in Brassy. The club also takes an active role in school chess beyond its own meeting room. In February 2026, Antoine Auzou organized both the Nièvre Schools Chess Championship and the Nièvre Colleges Chess Championship in Corbigny. Luc Martinez served as arbiter for both events. These competitions consisted of five rapid rounds and were free to enter. Consequently, school pupils could experience structured tournament chess without an entry-fee barrier. Morvan Échecs also participates in regional youth interclub competition. Therefore, younger members can progress from weekly lessons and school events into formal team chess within the French federation structure.♜ Regional Team Chess and Club Life
Morvan Échecs participates in regional adult interclub competition as well as regional youth competition. Team chess gives members another pathway beyond individual tournaments and allows the club to compete against other organizations in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Regular club activity takes place in more than one Morvan community. On Saturdays from 14:00 to 18:00, players meet in Brassy. In addition, the club runs a Thursday evening session from 19:00 to 22:00 in Lormes. The principal FFE-listed playing room is the Bibliothèque de Brassy. The venue provides accessibility for people with reduced mobility. Meanwhile, the additional Lormes session extends regular chess activity beyond Brassy itself. The club welcomes both beginners and experienced players. Members can find partners for informal games, receive advice to improve their chess, enter rated tournaments, and represent Morvan Échecs in team competition. As a result, the association combines competitive chess with the social club environment reflected in its founding objectives.🤝 Chess Development in the Nièvre and Morvan
Morvan Échecs frequently works in partnership rather than organizing events in isolation. Its cooperation with CDJE58 supports departmental championships, while collaboration with La Dame Blanche – Nevers strengthens the Nièvre individual championship program. Furthermore, the Trophée du Parc introduces a partnership with the Parc naturel régional du Morvan. This gives the club an opportunity to present chess within a broader regional setting and attract players to Saint-Brisson. The club’s development has been rapid. Founded only in 2023, Morvan Échecs now maintains several weekly sessions, adult and youth federation competition, school championships, an annual blitz and rapid festival, and an international FIDE-rated classical open. Therefore, the organization now provides a broad chess program for a rural area where players are spread across several communities rather than concentrated in one large city.
