♟️ About Memphis Chess Club
Memphis Chess Club (MCC) is a historic chess organization and dedicated chess venue in downtown Memphis, Tennessee. Founded on June 9, 1877, the club has maintained organized chess activity in the city for nearly 150 years. Since 2020, it has operated from permanent premises at 195 Madison Avenue, where the chess club shares its space with a full-service café and provides facilities for tournament play, casual chess, lessons, classes, and community events. MCC maintains a particularly active tournament schedule. Players can take part in regular US Chess-rated classical, quick, and blitz competition, longer weekend tournaments, beginner activities, and major regional events. Weekly programming during 2026 includes long-time-control Friday competition, Saturday dual-rated tournaments and blitz, as well as beginner-oriented activities. The club also hosts events outside its own premises in cooperation with public libraries and other Memphis organizations. Mike Shuey is the club’s current General Manager and the principal public contact for its chess operations. He directs many of MCC’s tournaments and also serves as West Tennessee Director for the Tennessee Chess Association. In September 2026, Memphis Chess Club will play a central organizing role in the 80th Annual Peter P. Lahde Tennessee Open & State Chess Championship, one of the most important events on its current calendar.📜 History and Development
Memphis Chess Club was established in 1877 by Dr. Dudley Saunders. During much of its history, the club operated from changing meeting locations around Memphis rather than from a permanent clubhouse. A major change came in October 2020, when a permanent downtown chess venue opened at 195 Madison Avenue. Local businessman Casey Hill and National Master Alex King were instrumental in creating the new home, which combined the traditions of a chess club with a publicly accessible café. The current premises also display elements of Memphis chess history and connect today’s players with earlier generations of the club. In recognition of its modern activity and community development, Memphis Chess Club received the US Chess Club of the Year award in 2022.🏆 Tournament Activity
MCC organizes rated chess throughout the year rather than limiting its program to occasional weekend events. Its 2026 schedule includes regular weekly tournaments with a range of time controls. Friday programming includes long classical games, while Saturdays feature US Chess dual-rated tournaments and separate blitz competition. The club also stages larger Swiss tournaments with substantial prize pools, including events developed for both experienced tournament players and developing competitors. The Mid-South Open remains one of the club’s established tournament traditions. The 2025 edition offered a $6,000 prize structure and long classical time controls. MCC has also organized Memphis Open events, National Chess Day tournaments, memorial competitions, rapid and blitz events, and other regional tournaments.♜ 2026 Tennessee Open & State Championship
Memphis Chess Club, the Tennessee Chess Association, Promarketing Group, and the Downtown Memphis Commission are organizing the 2026 Peter P. Lahde Tennessee Open & State Chess Championship from September 4–7, 2026. The six-round tournament offers $10,001 in unconditionally guaranteed prizes and carries enhanced US Chess Grand Prix status. Players compete in Open and Amateur sections, while eligible Tennessee residents can earn state championship titles and class honors. Most weekend rounds will take place at the Holiday Inn Memphis-Downtown, while selected rounds and the final awards activities will be held at Memphis Chess Club. The organizers have established several schedule options, allowing participants to choose between longer classical schedules and compressed alternatives before all players merge into the main tournament.🎓 Community and Learning
Memphis Chess Club combines tournament chess with regular opportunities for less experienced players. Its current program includes beginner classes as well as activities for children and adults who are still developing their chess skills. The club also works outside its downtown premises. In April 2026, for example, MCC partnered with Memphis Public Libraries to organize a free tournament at Orange Mound Library with separate rated and unrated sections for players of all ages. Because the downtown location operates throughout the week, players can also visit for casual chess, analysis, study, and informal games outside scheduled tournament hours. This permanent venue gives Memphis a central meeting point for both competitive and recreational chess.🏛️ Organization and Leadership
Mike Shuey currently serves as General Manager of Memphis Chess Club and directs much of its tournament activity. The Tennessee Chess Association also lists him as its West Tennessee Director. His responsibilities extend beyond club administration to tournament direction and regional chess development. Through these roles, MCC maintains close links with the Tennessee Chess Association and other chess organizations across West Tennessee.
