Märkischer Springer Halver-Schalksmühle e.V. (MSHS) is a chess club serving Halver and Schalksmühle in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The present organization was created in June 2012 through the merger of Schachverein Halver 1945 and Schachclub 1959 Schalksmühle/Hülscheid. Today, the club is affiliated with organized chess in South Westphalia and combines league competition, tournament organization, youth development, school chess, senior chess, and regular club activities. MSHS has grown into the largest chess club in the Schachverband Südwestfalen, with more than 120 members in 2026. More than 50 children and teenagers belong to its youth section. The club organizes the Volme-Open, Quickstep tournaments, internal championships, blitz events, youth competitions, and community chess activities. Moreover, it cooperates with Grundschule Spormecke and maintains chess activities in both Schalksmühle and Halver. Thomas Machatzke remains First Chairman and Managing Director following the club’s June 2026 elections. The club enters the 2026–2027 season with six adult teams for the first time, while its first team continues in the NRW-Klasse after securing survival during 2025–2026. Its next major event is the 16th Volme-Open, scheduled for September 4–6, 2026 at Kulturort 8Giebel in Schalksmühle. All 70 available places were already filled by early August.

📜 History and Development

The current club was established in June 2012, when the members of SV Halver joined SC 1959 Schalksmühle/Hülscheid and the organization adopted the name Märkischer Springer Halver-Schalksmühle e.V. Both predecessor clubs brought established local chess traditions to the merger. SV Halver dated from 1945, while SC 1959 Schalksmühle/Hülscheid had been active since 1959. Therefore, the 2012 merger combined two long-standing chess communities into a larger regional organization. The club has expanded considerably since then. By 2025, it reported 102 active registered members and 16 supporting members. Membership continued to grow, and by the June 2026 annual meeting the total had passed 120 members. The club has also used the Feuerwehrgerätehaus in Schalksmühle as an important base for many years. The predecessor SC 1959 moved there in September 2001, and MSHS continues to use the premises for club evenings, training, and chess activities.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Activity

Team chess is a central part of MSHS. The first team earned promotion to the NRW-Klasse and then successfully retained its place during the 2025–2026 season. A decisive result came with a 6–2 victory over SK Godesberg II, which secured survival before the final round. The second team also enjoyed a successful season and earned promotion to the Verbandsklasse, while the fourth team moved up to the Verbandsbezirksliga. Consequently, MSHS will field six adult teams in 2026–2027, the largest team program in its history. The first team will again compete in the NRW-Klasse, while additional teams will play at several South Westphalian league levels. This broad structure allows both stronger tournament players and developing club members to participate in regular team competition.

🎓 Youth Chess and School Cooperation

Youth development has become one of the club’s strongest areas. By 2026, the youth section included more than 50 children and teenagers, giving MSHS one of the largest junior programs in the region. The club works closely with the chess group at Grundschule Spormecke. Several children have progressed from the school program into regular club membership. In the school chess championship held in summer 2026, 13 children competed over five rounds, with Janosch Hüber finishing first. MSHS also organized the Volme-Jugend-Open 2025 in Schalksmühle. The event used separate age categories from U8 through U18 and offered seven rounds of rapid chess. Several host-club players won or placed strongly in their respective categories. Following the June 2026 board elections, Jesus Cabello Gonzalez and Tom Reich jointly took responsibility for youth chess. They succeeded long-serving youth director Karin Browning.

⚡ Quickstep and Club Tournaments

In addition to conventional league and open chess, MSHS organizes a distinctive Quickstep Tournament. The format places players into small groups based on DWZ strength, creating closely matched classical games within a one-day schedule. The 2026 Quickstep took place on June 4, 2026 in the Feuerwehrgerätehaus in Schalksmühle. Players competed in groups of four over three rounds, with 90 minutes per player for each game. The tournament was submitted for DWZ rating. MSHS also runs club championships, blitz competitions, rapid tournaments, senior chess, and other experimental formats. These activities provide regular competition between the club’s larger public events. After the 2026 elections, Timo Röhle and Daniel Babczyk jointly assumed responsibility for the club’s playing operations.

🏆 Volme-Open

The Volme-Open is the flagship tournament of Märkischer Springer Halver-Schalksmühle. The event has developed into a well-established regional open and regularly attracts players from different parts of North Rhine-Westphalia and neighboring states. The 16th Volme-Open is scheduled for September 4–6, 2026 at Kulturort 8Giebel, Am Mathagen 32, Schalksmühle. It will be the third edition played at this venue. The tournament has a maximum capacity of 70 players, and the entire field was already full by August 6, 2026, setting a new registration record. The 2026 entry list includes several strong players, among them FIDE Masters Klaus Schmitzer, Robert Prieb, and defending champion Marc Schulze. Players are divided into strength groups according to their DWZ ratings. Each section plays five rounds, normally as a round-robin group, with the final group adjusted when necessary. Games are submitted for DWZ evaluation. The time control gives each player 90 minutes for the first 30 moves plus 30 minutes for the remainder of the game. Thomas Machatzke handles tournament registration and organization.

🏛️ Current Leadership

The club completed an important board transition at its June 2026 annual meeting. Thomas Machatzke was confirmed as First Chairman and Managing Director, while Tobias Klampt continues as Second Chairman. Long-serving officials Dirk Jansen and Karin Browning stepped down from their board responsibilities. Their positions were reorganized into joint teams: Timo Röhle and Daniel Babczyk now share responsibility for playing operations, while Jesus Cabello Gonzalez and Tom Reich jointly lead youth chess. Harry Wiebe continues as Treasurer, Martin zu Putlitz manages club equipment, and Daniel Babczyk also serves as the club’s public-relations officer.
