♟️ About Main-Vogelsberg-Schachverband e.V.

Main-Vogelsberg-Schachverband e.V. (MVS) is the regional chess association for District 4 of the Hessischer Schachverband in Hesse, Germany. Based administratively in Bruchköbel, the association connects chess clubs across the Main-Kinzig area and neighboring parts of eastern Hesse. Its official directory currently includes 29 clubs and chess sections, ranging from Offenbach and Mühlheim to Hanau, Bruchköbel, Gelnhausen, Wächtersbach, Büdingen, Schlüchtern, and surrounding communities. The MVS is not a single chess club. Instead, it provides the competitive and administrative framework for its affiliated organizations. Its responsibilities include district team leagues, the Heinz-Köhler-Pokal, individual championships, rapid and blitz events, senior chess, rating administration, arbiter development, and the annual MVS-Open. Youth chess operates through the Main-Vogelsberg-Schachjugend (MVSJ), which maintains its own championships and team competition while working within the district structure. Andreas Filmann is the Chairman of Main-Vogelsberg-Schachverband and the principal official contact. Other active officials include Walter Gunkel, Kai-Ulrich Boldt, Christian Hochmuth, Dennis Hankel, Susanne Mainka, and Christopher Overbeck. The association is particularly active in summer and autumn 2026: the MVS-Open 2026 is currently taking place from August 28–30 in Wächtersbach, while the new adult and youth league seasons begin in September.

♜ District League and Team Competition

Main-Vogelsberg-Schachverband maintains its own multi-level team structure below the Hessian state leagues. For the 2026–2027 season, the planned divisions include Bezirksoberliga, Bezirksliga, Bezirksklasse, Kreisoberliga, and Kreisliga. The Bezirksoberliga includes teams such as SU Mühlheim, SG Kinzigtal, SV Königsspringer Großauheim, SC Nidderau, SC Obertshausen, SC Heusenstamm II, SK Bischofsheim, and 1. Hainstädter SC. Dennis Hankel serves as Tournament Director for team competition. The 2026–2027 calendar begins on September 5, 2026 at Kreis level and September 12 at Bezirk level. The district also organizes the Heinz-Köhler-Pokal, providing affiliated clubs with an additional knockout team competition alongside league play. This broad league pyramid allows clubs to place teams at an appropriate competitive level while creating promotion routes toward higher Hessian competitions.

🎓 Main-Vogelsberg-Schachjugend

Youth chess operates through Main-Vogelsberg-Schachjugend, led by Christopher Overbeck. The youth organization coordinates team competition, individual championships, rapid chess, training initiatives, school-chess activities, and qualification opportunities. The 2025–2026 MVSJ League featured 18 teams. VSG Offenbach I successfully defended the championship during the central final round in Nidderau, finishing with 13:1 match points. Schachdrachen Büdingen-Wächtersbach I placed second, while Königsspringer SV Großauheim finished third. Interest is continuing to grow. For the 2026–2027 youth season, organizers are planning for more than 20 teams, with the opening central round scheduled for September 13, 2026. The next major junior championship is the Open MVSJ Individual Championship, scheduled for October 24–25, 2026 at the Leibnizschule in Offenbach. The competition continues the district’s practice of combining official championship titles with an accessible tournament environment for developing players.

👑 Senior Chess, Training and Club Support

Senior chess also forms part of the MVS program. Walter Gunkel serves as Senior Chess Officer and coordinates the MVS Senior League. The 2026–2027 senior season is scheduled to begin on September 30, 2026. Earlier in the year, the district held its Senior Rapid Championship in Großauheim, where Wolfgang Kraft successfully defended his title. The association also supports its member clubs beyond tournaments. For example, it maintains an outdoor chess set that clubs can borrow for public events. Moreover, the district promotes arbiter education and works with the Hessischer Schachverband on qualification courses. A new regional arbiter course is scheduled for October 3–4, 2026 in Schlüchtern. These activities underline the MVS role as both a competition organizer and a service organization for clubs throughout District 4.

🏆 MVS-Open 2026

The MVS-Open 2026 is taking place from August 28–30, 2026 at the Heinrich-Heldmann-Halle in Wächtersbach. The tournament uses a five-round accelerated Swiss system. Players receive 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the remainder of the game, with a 30-second increment from move one. Results are submitted for German DWZ rating. The tournament therefore provides a compact classical weekend format for ambitious juniors, experienced club players, and competitors from across Hesse and neighboring regions. Christian Hochmuth, the MVS Tournament Director for individual competitions, serves as Chief Arbiter. The current field includes players from clubs such as SC Reichenbach, 1. Hainstädter SC, SK Gründau, SC Fulda, Schachdrachen Büdingen-Wächtersbach, and other regional organizations. The MVS-Open has become one of the association’s principal individual events. Together with district championships, league competition, youth events, senior chess, and cup tournaments, it gives Main-Vogelsberg players a comprehensive year-round competitive program.
