♟️ About Maestro Chess School
Maestro Chess School is an established chess training and tournament organization based in Astana, Kazakhstan. The school has been active for more than a decade and combines structured chess education with one of the city’s most regular programmes of classical, rapid, blitz, qualification, and FIDE-rated tournaments. Maestro works with children, developing tournament players, and adults. Its activities cover the full competitive pathway, from introductory training and sports-category tournaments to events where stronger players can compete for Candidate Master standards and international rating. The school is led by Anton Skurygin, an International Master, International Arbiter, and International Organizer. Under his direction, Maestro has developed into both a training centre and an important tournament venue within the Astana chess community.👤 Anton Skurygin & Coaching Team
Anton Skurygin is the head of Maestro Chess School and the principal organizer behind its tournament programme. He holds the titles of International Master, International Arbiter, and International Organizer, and the school describes him as the first International Organizer from Kazakhstan. Skurygin has extensive experience in tournament management, coaching, and arbiting. He regularly serves as Tournament Director or Chief Arbiter at Maestro events, including FIDE-rated classical tournaments, rapid and blitz cups, qualification tournaments, and team competitions. The wider coaching team includes experienced competitive players such as Zhangeldy Sabatayev and Karashash Sabatayeva, both Candidate Masters. This gives students access to coaches with practical tournament experience as well as formal training expertise.🎓 Chess Training
Maestro provides structured chess instruction for children and adults at different levels. Beginners can start with the fundamentals of the game, while stronger students work on calculation, positional understanding, openings, endgames, practical decision-making, and tournament preparation. The school also participates in programmes designed to make chess education more accessible to children. Through initiatives such as DamuBala, students aged approximately 7–17 have been able to access organized chess training and participate in school, city, national, and international competitions. Adult training is also available, including beginner-level weekend classes. This broader programme allows Maestro to serve not only ambitious juniors but also recreational players and adults who want to learn or improve their chess.🏆 Tournament Programme
Tournament organization is one of Maestro Chess School’s strongest areas. The school runs a dense calendar of standard, rapid, blitz, and qualification events throughout the year, with many tournaments submitted for international rating. The recurring Maestro Cup series includes rapid and blitz competitions for different rating groups. These events are organized frequently, giving Astana players regular opportunities to compete without waiting for a small number of major annual tournaments. In addition, Maestro organizes longer classical competitions. Recent events include the Maestro Standard Cup, FIDE-rated tournaments for players working toward higher sporting categories, and open competitions staged at the school’s Astana venue.📈 Qualification & Candidate Master Pathway
A distinctive feature of Maestro is its structured system of qualification tournaments. Players can enter competitions designed to achieve official sporting categories, including fourth, third, second, and first category standards. These tournaments provide a clear progression route for developing juniors who are moving from training into serious competitive chess. For stronger players, Maestro also organizes events with a Candidate Master of Sport (KMS) norm. In 2026, the school repeatedly ran qualifying tournaments whose leading players earned the right to enter KMS-norm competitions. This creates a practical competitive ladder inside one organization: students can begin with introductory training, earn successive sports categories, build rating experience, and eventually compete in stronger FIDE-rated classical events.⚡ Rapid, Blitz & Team Events
Rapid and blitz chess form another important part of the Maestro calendar. The school regularly organizes Maestro Cup events with rating limits, allowing players to compete against opponents of broadly similar strength. During 2026, Maestro staged numerous rapid and blitz tournaments with international rating calculation. Separate prizes were often offered for lower-rated competitors, giving developing players additional competitive objectives. The programme has also expanded into team competitions. In October 2026, Maestro organized Team Maestro Cups in both rapid and blitz, using FIDE-rated formats and a team Swiss system. These shorter events complement the classical programme and allow players to compete regularly across all three major formats of tournament chess.🌆 Role in Astana Chess
Maestro Chess School has become an active part of the chess infrastructure of Astana. Its frequent tournaments provide competitive opportunities for children, club players, strong juniors, adults, and experienced rated competitors. The school also cooperates with other institutions on chess events. One example is the Astana IT University Cup, where Maestro’s organizing committee managed rapid and blitz competitions aimed at popularizing chess in the city. By combining training with a very active tournament calendar, Maestro gives players the opportunity to move directly from lessons into formal competition. This close connection between coaching and tournament practice is one of the school’s defining characteristics.
