Koninklijke Gentse Schaakkring Ruy Lopez (KGSRL) is a historic chess club based in Ghent, East Flanders, Belgium. Its origins date to October 25, 1900, when the Cercle des Échecs de Gand was founded in the city. The present identity emerged after a 1966 merger with Schaakkring Ruy Lopez, which itself dated from 1939. Today, KGSRL is one of Belgium’s largest and oldest chess clubs and operates from its permanent Schaakhuis Caïssa in the historic center of Ghent. The club combines national and regional team chess with an exceptionally broad tournament and training program. Its activities include club championships, rapid and blitz competitions, rating-restricted events, women’s tournaments, senior chess, FIDE-rated weekenders, and the Schaakacademie Edgard Colle for youth and adult training. KGSRL also stages major federation events and organizes the annual Open International Chess Tournament of Ghent, one of the club’s defining international projects. Stefaan De Visser has served as President of KGSRL since 2003 and remains the club’s current chairman. During the 2025–2026 season, KGSRL’s first team won bronze in its national interclub division, while the second team finished second. The club also organized the 2026 Flemish Chess Championship and completed the 47th Ghent Open in July with 529 players across its three tournament sections. IM Gabriele Lumachi of Italy won the main FIDE-rated competition.

📜 More Than 125 Years of Chess in Ghent

The club was founded on October 25, 1900, at Café In den Hazewind on Ghent’s Koornmarkt. Its original founders registered the organization as Cercle des Échecs de Gand, and the first club championship followed in 1901. A second Ghent organization, Schaakkring Ruy Lopez, was founded on June 1, 1939. The two traditions came together through a merger on April 16, 1966, creating the structure that developed into today’s KGSRL. Another important milestone came in 1988, when the club inaugurated its own chess center at Abrahamstraat 46. The building became Schaakhuis Caïssa, providing dedicated playing rooms, meeting facilities, a chess library, and space for training and tournament activities. The club marked 125 years of organized chess history in 2025–2026, while continuing an unusually dense program of competitive and community events.

♜ National and Regional Team Chess

Team competition remains a central part of KGSRL. The club enters numerous teams in the Belgian National Interclubs as well as competitions organized within East Flanders. The 2025–2026 National Interclub season ended on April 19, 2026. KGSRL’s first team finished third, while the second team took second place in its division. Several lower teams also recorded top-five finishes. Individual results were also notable. Amir Zouaghi scored 7/9 for the first team and earned his first International Master norm during the season. Mathias De Weird produced the club’s highest overall individual score with 8.5/11. This large team structure gives KGSRL players opportunities across a wide range of ratings, from experienced national-level competitors to juniors gaining their first interclub experience.

🎓 Schaakacademie Edgard Colle and Youth Chess

Youth development operates principally through the Schaakacademie Edgard Colle, founded in 1993 and named after the celebrated Ghent chess master Edgard Colle. The academy traditionally serves around 50 students per year and uses the structured Steps Method. Training covers multiple levels, from young beginners through advanced juniors. KGSRL also offers courses for adult beginners and stronger club players. The youth program combines formal lessons with tournament participation and practical competition. In early 2026, the club’s Winter Youth Tournament attracted 63 players across six age categories from U8 through U20. KGSRL has already announced another full program of Edgard Colle Chess Academy lessons for the 2026–2027 season, continuing its long-term investment in player development.

🏆 Flemish Championship and Club Tournament Program

KGSRL regularly organizes competitions extending beyond its own membership. From May 14–17, 2026, it hosted the Flemish Chess Championship under the auspices of the Vlaamse Schaakfederatie. The championship attracted 70 players, including 18 in the closed championship group and 52 in the Open. FM Warre De Waele won the main section with 5.5/7 and became Flemish Champion, while Yordi De Block won the Open with 6.5/7. Other 2026 events included the Ladies Open Gent, Winter and Spring C&D tournaments, Rimpelschaak, several rapid and blitz series, FIDE-rated weekend competitions, and public chess events in central Ghent.

🌟 Open International Chess Tournament of Ghent

The Open International Chess Tournament of Ghent (Gent Open) is KGSRL’s flagship international competition. The 47th edition took place from July 18–22, 2026 at Sint-Barbaracollege in Ghent. The 2026 festival offered three separate competitions: a FIDE-rated Open, an unrated Open, and a 55+ tournament. Participation reached 529 players overall, including 414 players in the FIDE-rated section and 91 in the 55+ competition. The two principal Opens used a nine-round Swiss system with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The combined advertised prize fund across all three tournaments was €10,890. IM Gabriele Lumachi won the FIDE-rated Open, finishing half a point ahead of a four-player chasing group. IM Sim Maerevoet won the unrated tournament, while Hans Dam took first place in the 55+ section. The tournament is organized by KGSRL in cooperation with the City of Ghent and remains the club’s largest annual international event.
