♟️ About the Organizer

Kingston Chess Club is a long-established chess club in Kingston upon Thames, England. The earliest known record of the club dates from 1875. It serves players from south-west London, Surrey, and nearby areas. The club celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2025.

The club meets every Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Richard Mayo Centre. The venue forms part of the United Reformed Church in central Kingston. It stands within walking distance of Kingston railway station and several local bus routes.

Kingston Chess Club welcomes players with different levels of experience. Its membership ranges from beginners to international masters. Club nights include league matches, rated games, social chess, coaching, lectures, simultaneous exhibitions, study sessions, and internal competitions. New visitors may attend before deciding whether to become members.

🏆 Chess Events and Activities

The club organizes the Kingston Invitational, a high-level FIDE-rated tournament launched in 2022. The event aims to provide strong competitive games for Kingston members and invited players from other clubs, regions, and countries. Previous editions have used Swiss-system and all-play-all formats.

The fifth Kingston Invitational takes place from August 17 to 21, 2026. It features a 9-round FIDE-rated Swiss tournament at the Richard Mayo Centre. The time control is 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one. The organizer plans to accept a maximum of 64 invited players.

Kingston Chess Club also runs regular rapid, blitz, Fischer Random, friendly, and ECF-rated events. Its public schedule includes summer competitions, training sessions, lectures, social evenings, and matches against other clubs. Chess-Results also lists club blitz and Fischer Random tournaments held in 2026.

🌍 Competitive Chess and Community

Kingston enters teams in the Surrey and Thames Valley leagues. Its Surrey program includes teams in several divisions and knockout competitions. The club also competes in the Thames Valley League’s first and second divisions, along with a development division for newer players.

The club also participates in the Four Nations Chess League through a partnership with Chess in Schools and Communities. This arrangement gives club members access to national team competition. Kingston won the online 4NCL national team championship in 2020.

Kingston balances competitive chess with social and educational activity. The club accepts junior players when a parent or responsible adult accompanies them. It also maintains safeguarding, conduct, data-protection, and media policies for its members. The club committee includes a president, chair, secretary, treasurer, events director, training lead, fixtures secretary, and club captain.
