♟️ About Israel Chess Federation

The Israel Chess Federation is the national governing body for chess in Israel. It was founded in 1935 and later incorporated as a registered association in 1983. The federation represents Israeli chess internationally and is a member of both FIDE and the European Chess Union (ECU). It also coordinates the country’s national competition system, player ratings, clubs, arbiters, coaches, and international representation. Over the decades, the federation has developed a nationwide chess structure that connects local clubs with national and international competition. It supervises official championships for individuals and teams, while also supporting rapid, blitz, youth, women’s, and senior chess. In addition, the federation maintains national rating and qualification systems. Israeli players selected for official international events compete under its authority. The federation’s current leadership includes Zeev Elkin as President, Dr. Zvika Barkai as Chairman, and Gil Boruchovsky as CEO. Together with the federation’s board, committees, league administration, arbiters, and professional staff, they oversee both competitive and developmental programs.

🏆 National & International Tournaments

Tournament organization is one of the federation’s central responsibilities. Each year, it oversees the Israeli Individual Championship, national rapid and blitz championships, team leagues, youth championships, women’s competitions, cup events, and qualification tournaments. These events range from local and regional stages to major national finals. The federation also works with Israeli clubs, municipalities, universities, hotels, and other partners to stage international tournaments. In recent years, Israel has hosted strong opens and elite events with grandmasters from many countries. As a result, Israeli players receive more opportunities to compete against high-level international opposition without travelling abroad. The 2026 Israeli Open Championship in Acre featured more than 100 players, including numerous grandmasters and international masters. The national rapid and blitz championships also attracted very large fields during 2026. For example, the Israeli Rapid Championship in Holon reached 329 participants, while the national blitz event in Afula attracted 286 players.

⚡ Jerusalem Rapid Open

The federation is also the organizer of the Jerusalem Rapid Open 2026, one of its most ambitious international events of the year. The tournament takes place on November 17–18, 2026 at the Ramada Hotel Jerusalem. It consists of nine FIDE-rated rapid rounds with a time control of 15 minutes plus 10 seconds per move. The Open offers a €45,000 prize fund and is limited to 400 participants. Moreover, the top two finishers receive the opportunity to play in a separate elite closed rapid tournament in Jerusalem later in November. That event is scheduled for November 23–26 and offers a $250,000 prize fund. The Jerusalem tournament continues a series of high-level international events developed by the federation in recent years. The 2025 Jerusalem Masters, for example, featured elite players including Viswanathan Anand, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Peter Svidler, and Arjun Erigaisi. Therefore, Jerusalem has become an increasingly important location in Israel’s international chess calendar.

🌱 Youth Chess & Development

Youth development is another major part of the federation’s work. National championships are organized across several age categories, while local and regional qualifying competitions create a pathway toward the finals. The federation also supports youth leagues, team championships, training programs, and international participation. In July 2026, the national youth finals brought together players in the U10, U12, U14, U16, and U18 categories. Successful players could earn support for participation in international youth championships. At the same time, younger age groups and girls’ competitions formed part of the broader national program. The federation also works to expand chess beyond traditional clubs. Its official statutes specifically include promoting chess in schools, universities, and other educational institutions. Consequently, development programs combine competitive pathways with broader chess education.

Israel has an extensive national team-league structure administered by the federation. Clubs compete across several divisions, with the strongest teams meeting in the National League. The federation also organizes youth leagues, women’s leagues, regional competitions, and the Israeli Team Cup. The 2026 National League brought together leading clubs from around the country. Meanwhile, the Women’s Elite League featured 14 teams, showing the growing breadth of organized women’s competition. The federation also operates promotion and relegation systems that connect different competitive levels. Beyond domestic competition, the federation selects Israel’s national teams for official FIDE and ECU events. Israeli players represent the country at Chess Olympiads, European championships, youth championships, and other international competitions. This international activity remains one of the federation’s core responsibilities.

The Israel Chess Federation traces its institutional history to 1935. Since then, it has become the central authority for organized chess in the country. Its responsibilities cover competition, regulation, rating, arbitration, coaching, club support, national-team selection, and international representation. Israeli chess has produced many internationally recognized players, including grandmasters who have competed at the highest levels of world chess. The federation’s structure has helped support that competitive tradition while also maintaining a broad domestic league and tournament system.
