♟️ About Invicta Chess
Invicta Chess is an independent chess tournament organizer based in Kent, England, running competitive events across Medway, Snodland, Chatham, and the wider South East. Its program includes classical congresses, Rapid tournaments, simultaneous exhibitions, and events rated by the English Chess Federation (ECF) and FIDE. The organization is closely associated with David Lettington, who serves as its principal organizer and tournament director. Lettington is a long-standing Kent chess player and administrator with extensive experience in tournament organization, club chess, county competition, and event arbitration. Invicta Chess began organizing events in 2017, when the first Medway Chess Congress was launched. Since then, the organization has developed a recurring tournament calendar and expanded from traditional weekend congresses into Rapid tournaments and internationally rated classical events.🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities
The Medway Chess Congress is one of Invicta Chess’s main events. The original congress was launched in September 2017, while the modern series has developed into a FIDE-rated weekend competition in Chatham. The 2026 Medway FIDE-rated Congress was held at Chatham Masonic Hall and featured five rounds of classical chess at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment per move. The Open and U1800 sections were rated by both FIDE and the ECF, while an additional U1400 section provided competition for lower-rated players. The 2nd Medway Chess Congress 2027 expands the format further. Scheduled for September 24–26, 2027, it offers three sections — Open, U1850, and U1550 — with all three registered for both FIDE and ECF Standard rating. The congress has a published £1,500 prize fund and a maximum capacity of 96 players. Invicta Chess also runs Medway Rapidplay tournaments. These one-day competitions use shorter time controls and rating-based sections, giving players an alternative to the organization’s classical weekend events. Another recurring event is the Snodland Rapidplay, which has developed over several editions. Recent versions have included Open, U1800/U1850, and lower-rated sections, typically played over five ECF-rated Rapid rounds.⚡ Rapid Chess & Local Events
Rapid chess forms an important part of the Invicta Chess calendar. The Snodland and Medway Rapidplay events are designed to provide a full tournament experience within a single day. The Snodland Rapidplay 2027, for example, uses five rounds at 25 minutes plus five seconds increment per move. The event includes Open, U1800, and U1400 sections and provides cash prizes in each group. Invicta Chess events generally use digital clocks, computerized pairings, ECF rating lists, and clear section boundaries. The organization also publishes detailed tournament rules covering half-point byes, rating eligibility, electronic devices, refunds, prize sharing, default times, and parental responsibility for junior players. The tournament program therefore serves a broad range of competitors, from experienced Open-section players to club players entering lower rating sections.🌍 FIDE & ECF Rated Competition
Invicta Chess has increasingly developed internationally rated competition in Kent. At the 2026 Medway Congress, David Lettington served as Chief Arbiter for FIDE-rated sections, while the events were processed for both national and international Standard ratings. The 2027 Medway Congress takes this development further by making all three sections FIDE rated. This is particularly useful for players below 1550 or 1850 who want international Standard-rated games without entering an unrestricted Open section. The organization also uses established tournament platforms such as ChessManager for pairings and results. Its events are regularly listed through the English Chess Federation calendar, giving players clear access to official tournament information.🤝 Community Chess & Accessibility
Invicta Chess places noticeable emphasis on making tournament chess accessible. Several recent events have been advertised as disability friendly, and tournament rules encourage players with specific access requirements to contact the organizer before the event. Invicta Chess has also offered free or subsidized places for female players at Medway events. The first Medway Rapidplay in 2025 received support through an ECF Grassroots Funding initiative, while later Medway events continued to advertise a limited number of free female entries. The organization also supports chess beyond conventional tournament play. David Lettington has organized simultaneous exhibitions with leading players, including former European Champion GM Sergey Tiviakov and British Grandmaster Shreyas Royal. These activities help connect tournament players, local clubs, and the wider Kent chess community.📚 History & Development
Invicta Chess’s first announced event was the 1st Medway Chess Congress in September 2017. During the same period, an Invicta Chess team also competed in the Four Nations Chess League’s Division Four South. Over the following years, David Lettington continued organizing tournaments across Kent while remaining active in local club and county chess. He has longstanding connections with Snodland Chess Club and has represented the club in more than 100 competitive matches. The current Invicta Chess program has evolved into a combination of weekend classical congresses, one-day Rapid tournaments, exhibitions, and FIDE-rated events. Its current website highlights the Medway FIDE Congress, Snodland Rapidplay, and a planned Maidstone Congress, demonstrating that the organization continues to develop a multi-event calendar across Kent and Medway.
