Hong Kong China Chess Federation Limited (HKCCFL) is the official governing body for chess in Hong Kong, China. Founded in 1960, the federation joined FIDE in 1961 and is a member of the Asian Chess Federation in FIDE Zone 3.3. It coordinates official chess activity in Hong Kong and represents the territory within the international chess structure. HKCCFL organizes FIDE-rated tournaments, Hong Kong championships, junior competitions, selection events, rapid and blitz tournaments, and international Opens. It also supports FIDE ID applications and selects players to represent Hong Kong at major international competitions, including the Chess Olympiad and other Asian and world events. Regular federation chess activity takes place at venues across Hong Kong, including its clubhouse sessions at Smithfield Sports Centre in Kennedy Town. The federation significantly expanded its international tournament activity in 2026. It co-hosted the FIDE World Team Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, organized the Asian Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships, and continues to stage the Hong Kong International Open alongside its regular domestic championship calendar. 🏆 Hong Kong Championships and Local Events

HKCCFL maintains an active year-round tournament calendar for local players. The HKSAR Rapid Chess Championship 2026 was played across three Fridays in August at Smithfield Sports Centre. The nine-round FIDE-rated competition used a 15+10 time control, with the eligible winner earning the opportunity to represent Hong Kong at the World Rapid and Blitz Championships. The federation also organizes the HKSAR Blitz Chess Championship, regular HKCCFL rapid and blitz practice tournaments, the Bauhinia Open series, and selection competitions for international events.

🌍 Major International Events in 2026

The year 2026 marked an important step forward for international chess in Hong Kong. From June 17–21, FIDE and HKCCFL jointly organized the FIDE World Team Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships 2026 at Queen Elizabeth Stadium. More than 300 players representing over 40 teams competed, including many of the world’s leading Grandmasters. It was the first edition of the championship held in East Asia. HKCCFL then organized the Asian Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships 2026 in Hong Kong. The competition brought together players representing member federations from across Asia and was supported by the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Leisure and Cultural Services Department. These events demonstrated the federation’s growing capacity to organize major continental and world-level competitions.

🏆 Hong Kong International Open

The Hong Kong International Open Chess Championship is HKCCFL’s flagship annual classical tournament. The tournament has developed significantly since its launch in 2010. The 2025 edition attracted more than 400 players from 30 regions, including over 80 titled players, making it the largest edition at that time. The Hong Kong International Open Chess Championship 2026 takes place from December 23–29, 2026 at Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wan Chai. The event includes Open and Challengers sections, nine FIDE-rated classical rounds, possible title norms in the Open section, and a published prize fund of HK$139,000.

🎓 Junior and International Representation

Junior chess is an important part of HKCCFL’s work. The federation organizes junior competitions in Hong Kong and coordinates participation in major Asian youth championships. It also provides a pathway for Hong Kong players to obtain FIDE IDs, gain international ratings, and compete internationally under the HKG federation. HKCCFL also runs selection events when qualification is required for major international championships. Its August 2026 calendar included selection activity for the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games 2026.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

K.K. Chan (Kwai Keong Chan) is the current President of Hong Kong China Chess Federation Limited. FIDE confirmed him in this position during the 2026 World Team Rapid and Blitz Championships in Hong Kong. He is also an experienced International Arbiter and International Organizer who has directed numerous major international tournaments. The federation’s current committee also includes Robin Lai and Daniel Lam as Vice Presidents, while Geoffrey Kao serves as Honorary President.
