♟️ About Harstad Sjakklubb
Harstad Sjakklubb is a chess club based in Harstad, Troms, in northern Norway. The club affiliates with Norges Sjakkforbund and belongs to Troms og Nordre Nordland Sjakkrets. It organizes international tournaments, regional championships, local club competitions, chess instruction, and regular activities for both adults and children. The club was founded on March 5, 1922, making it one of the long-established chess organizations in northern Norway. Harstad Sjakklubb celebrated its centenary in 2022 with a major international tournament. Moreover, the club’s history includes decades of participation in northern Norwegian chess and the organization of championship events in Harstad. FM Stein Jensen currently serves as Chairman of Harstad Sjakklubb. He is also closely involved in tournament organization and chess instruction. In 2026, Jensen won the Norwegian Senior 65+ Blitz Championship with a perfect 12/12 score and finished second in the Senior 65+ classical championship. In addition, he serves as the principal contact for the club’s flagship international tournament.🏆 Advokatfirmaet FINN Rapid Chess International
Harstad Sjakklubb organizes the annual Advokatfirmaet FINN Rapid Chess International, its flagship international competition. The tournament has developed into a recurring meeting point for Norwegian players and invited titled competitors from other countries. The series has run for more than a decade. The 2025 tournament marked its 13th edition and attracted 79 players to Thon Hotel Harstad. The field included four Grandmasters, four International Masters, and three Woman Grandmasters. Moreover, the club supplemented the main competition with a banquet, simultaneous exhibitions, presentations, and a separate children’s tournament. The Advokatfirmaet FINN Rapid Chess International 2026 takes place from October 2–4, 2026, in Harstad. FIDE registers separate A and B sections, both with a rapid time control of 25 minutes plus 10 seconds per move. Magnus Aanstad serves as Chief Arbiter. The club has developed a distinctive tradition of inviting strong female titled players alongside other leading competitors. Previous editions have welcomed players such as GM Pia Cramling, GM Simen Agdestein, IM Anna Zatonskih, WGM Nino Maisuradze, WGM Lenka Ptáčníková, and other international guests. Therefore, the event combines high-level competitive chess with a strong social and international program.♜ Championships and Club Competition
Harstad Sjakklubb maintains an active tournament calendar beyond its international rapid event. Its regular program includes Harstad city championships in classical, rapid, and blitz chess, instructional evenings, seasonal tournaments, and traditional holiday competitions. For example, the club organizes the Karl Jensens Nyttårsminneturnering and its traditional Romjulssjakk during the Christmas period. In addition, members compete throughout the year in structured A and B groups as well as open city championship events. Harstad also regularly takes responsibility for larger regional competitions. In 2025, the club organized the Nordnorsk Mesterskap at Thon Hotel Harstad. Around 30 players competed in the principal championship groups, while a children’s tournament ran alongside the main event. Meanwhile, Harstad hosted the 2026 Troms og Nordre Nordland Team Championship on behalf of the regional chess association. The club also won the regional team championship in 2024. Consequently, Harstad Sjakklubb plays an active role not only in local chess but throughout the wider northern Norwegian tournament structure.🎓 Chess Training and Player Development
The club provides regular chess instruction for its members. During the 2026 spring season, training sessions covered areas such as pawn endings, rook endings, and analysis of tournament games. Stein Jensen led several of these instructional evenings. Adult club activities take place on Thursday evenings. The program combines classical, rapid, and blitz competitions with lessons, game analysis, and informal play. Therefore, members can use the same club environment for both structured improvement and regular competition. Harstad Sjakklubb has also produced competitive players who represent the club in tournaments throughout Norway. In 2026, Harstad members competed in events such as the Landsturneringen, Rallarsjakken, and northern Norwegian championships. Moreover, the club continues to welcome new players into its local tournament structure.🧒 Children’s Chess and School Activity
Children’s chess has long formed an important part of the Harstad chess environment. The club currently provides a dedicated Thursday session for children from 17:30 to 18:45, before the adult club evening begins. Youth activities also operate through the separately registered Harstad Sjakklubbs Ungdom. The junior structure organizes children’s tournaments and provides younger players with opportunities to move from introductory chess into organized competition. For example, Barnas Grand Prix 2025 in Harstad attracted 24 children from Harstad, Tromsø, Sortland, and Narvik. Another children’s competition accompanied the 2025 Nordnorsk Mesterskap. In addition, Harstad scheduled a junior tournament alongside the regional team championship in January 2026. The club also has a history of bringing chess into local schools. Earlier school programs in Harstad produced strong participation in national school chess initiatives, while titled visitors to the international tournament have taken part in school visits and simultaneous exhibitions. Consequently, youth development connects the club’s international tournament activity with grassroots chess in the city.🤝 Club Life and Chess in Northern Norway
Harstad Sjakklubb currently meets at Harstad skole in the center of the city. The regular schedule provides separate playing times for children and adults, while the club also uses larger local venues for major tournaments. The organization maintains close competitive links with clubs in Tromsø, Narvik, Sortland, Bodø, Fauske, and other northern Norwegian communities. Players regularly travel between these clubs for regional tournaments, team championships, rapid events, and weekend competitions. Moreover, Harstad’s flagship international tournament brings another dimension to this regional activity. Through partnerships with sponsors such as Advokatfirmaet FINN and SpareBank 1 Nord-Norge’s community initiatives, the club has been able to bring internationally titled players to northern Norway. Today, more than a century after its foundation, Harstad Sjakklubb combines traditional club chess with youth development, regional championships, and ambitious international tournament organization.
