♟️ About the Greek Chess Federation

The Greek Chess Federation (Ελληνική Σκακιστική Ομοσπονδία – ΕΣΟ) is the national governing body for chess in Greece. Founded in 1948 and headquartered in Athens, it oversees organized chess throughout the country and represents Greek chess internationally. Its responsibilities cover affiliated clubs and regional associations, national competitions, player registration and ratings, national teams, arbiters, regulations, and chess-development programs. The federation runs an extensive annual program that includes the Greek Individual and Women’s Championships, the A’ Ethniki National Team Championship, Greek Team Cup, youth and junior championships, school competitions, and national rapid and blitz championships. It also works with regional unions and local clubs to develop competitive chess across Greece while supporting Greek players and national teams in FIDE and European Chess Union events. The federation is led by President Prof. Stathis Efstathopoulos. In July 2026, Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou, who also serves as Secretary General of the European Chess Union, was elected General Secretary of the Greek Chess Federation. Current 2026 activity includes the national Rapid and Blitz Championships in Athens and preparations connected with the European Youth Chess Championships 2026, scheduled for November 2–13 in Hersonissos, Crete.

📜 History and Development

The Greek Chess Federation was established in 1948, creating a national organizational framework for chess clubs and competitive chess in Greece. Over subsequent decades, the federation developed national championship structures and expanded Greece’s presence in international chess. Greece has also hosted several important international competitions. Thessaloniki notably staged the Chess Olympiads in 1984 and 1988, events that became significant landmarks in modern Greek chess history. The country has since continued to host European and FIDE competitions, while Greek officials have remained active within international chess administration. The federation today combines traditional competition management with player services, digital registration, national ratings, club support, arbiter administration, educational initiatives, and international representation.

🏆 National Championships and Competition Program

The Greek Chess Federation coordinates the principal national chess championships across classical, rapid, and blitz formats. One of its central team competitions is the A’ Ethniki, the highest division of Greek club chess. The 53rd Panhellenic A’ Ethniki Team Championship was held in Patras from July 4–10, 2026, with the federation organizing the final phase together with local partners. The wider national program also includes the Greek Team Cup and championships for children, juniors, adults, and women. In August 2026, the federation organized the 12th Panhellenic Open Individual Blitz Championship on August 28 and the 20th Panhellenic Open Individual Rapid Championship on August 29 in Athens. The Blitz Championship used a nine-round Swiss system with a 3+2 time control, while both events awarded national titles across multiple age and competition categories.

🎓 School Chess and Youth Development

School chess has become a major part of the federation’s development strategy. In May 2022, chess was approved for teaching within Greece’s Skills Labs educational framework. The federation subsequently developed educational programs for kindergarten, primary school, and junior high school, alongside initiatives to train teachers to use chess in educational settings. The scale of this work was demonstrated at the 2026 Panhellenic School Chess Championships in Thessaloniki. Around 1,600 students from 74 schools participated, including 1,223 players in the individual championships. The program combined individual and team competition with wider educational and chess-promotion activities. The federation also supports youth championships from U8 upward and initiatives designed to connect young players from different parts of Greece, including island communities.

🌍 International Chess

The Greek Chess Federation represents Greece within the international chess structure and works with FIDE and the European Chess Union on championships, national-team participation, development projects, and international events hosted in Greece. A major upcoming event is the European Youth Chess Championships 2026, scheduled for November 2–13, 2026 at the Royal & Imperial Belvedere Resort in Hersonissos, Crete. The championship covers Open and Girls categories at U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, and U18 level, with each section played over nine rounds.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Prof. Stathis Efstathopoulos serves as President of the Greek Chess Federation. The current board also includes officials responsible for competitions, national teams, school chess, development, digital administration, and sporting integrity. In July 2026, the federation’s board elected Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou as General Secretary. The federation also includes Georgios Makropoulos, FIDE Vice President and former long-serving federation president, as an Honorary President and board member.
