SG agro Geithain e.V. is the chess organization behind the long-running Geithainer Sommerturnier in Geithain, Saxony, Germany. The MyChess.Events organizer entry identified as the “Geithain Chess Organizing Team” therefore represents the tournament-organizing activity of SG agro Geithain rather than a separate formal chess organization. The club coordinates the event with tournament officials, volunteers, local supporters, and the City of Geithain. The organization’s principal public activity is the annual Geithainer Sommerturnier, a traditional weekend competition played in two rating groups. 📜 Tournament Tradition

The Geithainer Sommerturnier has a history extending back several decades. By 2012, the event had already reached its 27th edition, with more than 100 participants representing clubs from Germany and neighboring countries. The 30th edition in 2015 attracted 110 players from 45 clubs. That edition was organized by SG agro Geithain and supported by the City of Geithain, whose mayor traditionally participated in the opening ceremony. The event continued to grow as an established tournament on the Saxon chess calendar. In 2024, SG agro Geithain organized the 35th edition at Bürgerhaus Geithain. The 36th edition followed from August 29–31, 2025, again using the two-group structure and a participant limit designed to maintain suitable playing conditions.

🏆 Geithainer Sommerturnier

The tournament is divided into Group A and Group B, allowing players of different rating levels to compete in more balanced fields. In recent editions, the dividing line has been approximately 1750 DWZ. Both sections use a five-round Swiss system. The tournament is played across three days, beginning on Friday and concluding on Sunday afternoon. Results are submitted for German DWZ rating. The winner of Group A receives a certificate, a miniature trophy, and the City of Geithain Challenge Trophy. The winner of Group B receives a trophy and also earns the right to play in Group A at the following edition. This format has helped the tournament remain attractive to both experienced club competitors and developing players. In addition, the event regularly welcomes juniors, adults, and senior players from numerous clubs.

♟️ 37th Geithainer Sommerturnier 2026

The 37th Geithainer Sommerturnier is taking place from August 28–30, 2026 in Geithain. The official organizer listed for both tournament sections is SG agro Geithain. The competition consists of Group A and Group B, with five Swiss-system rounds in each section. The published 2026 time control is 90 minutes for 36 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the remainder of the game. André Voigt is the Chief Arbiter for the 2026 tournament. The event is being held at Bürgerhaus Geithain, Louis-Petermann-Straße 10, which has become the regular venue for the tournament in recent years. The City of Geithain also lists the tournament in its official 2026 events calendar as a three-day chess tournament organized by SG agro Geithain. This continuing municipal recognition reflects the event’s long association with the city.

The Geithainer Sommerturnier is designed primarily for regular club chess players rather than only elite competitors. Its two-section structure allows a broad range of playing strengths to participate under classical tournament conditions. SG agro Geithain has also relied on cooperation with chess players and clubs from the surrounding region. Tournament reports from previous editions have acknowledged organizational and material assistance from clubs and individual chess players in Leipzig, Burgstädt, Kitzscher, Rochlitz, and other nearby communities. As a result, the tournament functions not only as an annual competition but also as a regional meeting point for the Saxon chess community. Its longevity, stable tournament format, and recurring participation have made it one of Geithain’s established annual chess events.
