Fundacja Szachowa im. gen. Kazimierza Sosnkowskiego is a Warsaw-based chess foundation that operates from Konwiktorska 6 in Warsaw, Poland. It entered the national register in 2004 and works closely with the chess environment around Klub Szachowy Polonia Warszawa. For players, the foundation gives Warsaw a stable organizer for major tournaments, youth training, and recurring chess projects with a clear local base. It also carries a strong public identity through long-term work in competition and education. Maria Macieja has served as president since 2023, and she remains the clearest public-facing contact for the foundation today.
🏆 Tournament Activity
The foundation is best known for the Warsaw Chess Festival, which it has organized since 2007. That event has become one of the biggest international chess festivals in Poland and continues to combine the Jan Macieja Memorial and the Mieczysław Najdorf Memorial. The foundation also runs the annual Turniej Niepodległości, staged every year since 2009 on 11 November in Warsaw. In addition, its event portfolio includes the Warszawska Olimpiada Młodzieży, annual summer chess camps, and repeated editions of the European rapid and blitz championships. This range matters for players because the foundation does not depend on one single tournament. Instead, it supports elite, open, youth, and civic-themed chess through a consistent organizer structure.
🌱 Youth Training and Community Work
The foundation also plays a clear role in youth training and entry-level chess development. It runs Szkółka Szachowa Polonii, which welcomes beginner children and players with the lowest national categories, even when they do not yet belong to a club. In the 2025/2026 school year, the foundation scheduled weekly in-person and online groups at Konwiktorska 6, with training led by Paweł Suwarski. The strongest children can then continue their chess path inside Klub Szachowy Polonia Warszawa, where advanced coaching is available. Beyond that, the foundation organizes annual seaside chess trips that combine training, integration, and festival play. For families and younger players, this creates a practical route from first lessons to stronger tournament chess in the same environment.
