♟️ About Fundación Nacional Ecuatoriana

Fundación Nacional Ecuatoriana (FNE) is a nonprofit social-development organization based in Quito, Pichincha, Ecuador. It is not a chess federation or conventional chess club. Instead, the foundation develops educational, social, cultural, recreational, and sports projects designed to support individuals and communities. Chess has become one of its most visible educational and sporting activities. The foundation develops chess through its Escuela Nacional de Ajedrez project and through the organization of national and international tournaments in Quito. Its chess work covers beginner education, youth development, competitive training, FIDE-rated tournaments, rapid and blitz chess, school competitions, simultaneous exhibitions, and opportunities for Ecuadorian players to compete against international opposition. The foundation also cooperates with chess organizations and educational partners on larger tournament projects. Edelmira Jaramillo is the current Tournament Director for the foundation’s principal 2026 international chess events and is therefore the most relevant operational contact for tournament activity. Fundación Nacional Ecuatoriana is currently preparing the second edition of its Atahualpa international tournament program in Quito. The most recently updated Chess-Results records list the main II Torneo Internacional Atahualpa for October 20–25, 2026, with a related international school event from October 22–25.

🤝 Social, Educational and Community Mission

Fundación Nacional Ecuatoriana works across a much broader field than chess. Its stated mission focuses on improving quality of life through education, training, social assistance, cultural programs, recreation, sports, health-related initiatives, and community development. The organization develops projects according to the human and financial resources available. These activities include educational workshops, vocational training, support for vulnerable families, cultural initiatives, sporting events, community activities, and donations of food and essential goods. Chess fits naturally within this wider educational model. Rather than treating the game only as a competitive sport, the foundation uses it as another way to develop skills, create learning opportunities, encourage participation, and bring children and adults together through structured activities.

🎓 Escuela Nacional de Ajedrez

The Escuela Nacional de Ajedrez is one of the foundation’s flagship educational projects. According to Fundación Nacional Ecuatoriana, the chess-school initiative has operated for more than six years and has reached players ranging from complete beginners to advanced competitors. The foundation reports that its chess programs have reached thousands of students through different courses and projects. In addition, students connected with the initiative have achieved national and international competitive results, including FIDE titles. The school provides the educational foundation for the organization’s broader chess activity. Consequently, young Ecuadorian players can move from learning and training into rated competition, while stronger students gain opportunities to face experienced national and international opponents.

🌍 Atahualpa International Chess Project

The Atahualpa tournament project represents Fundación Nacional Ecuatoriana’s most ambitious international chess initiative. The inaugural festival took place in Quito in August 2025 and combined classical, rapid, blitz, school, and additional chess activities. The foundation reported 110 participants from 11 countries in the first edition, including 22 titled players. The field included Grandmasters, a Woman Grandmaster, International Masters, FIDE Masters, Candidate Masters, and other titled competitors. Alongside the principal classical Open, the program included an international school tournament, rapid and blitz competitions, simultaneous chess, and a formal opening ceremony with representatives of institutions and universities. The foundation organized the festival with cooperation from the Federación Ecuatoriana de Ajedrez and Escuela Nacional de Ajedrez ANAJ. In addition, tournament-management platform Modern Chess supported the inaugural event.

🏆 II Torneo Internacional Atahualpa 2026

The second Atahualpa international tournament program is scheduled to return to Quito in October 2026. According to the latest Chess-Results update, the II Torneo Internacional Atahualpa is scheduled for October 20–25, 2026. Players will contest nine Swiss-system rounds at a classical time control of 60 minutes + 30 seconds per move. The tournament is registered for both national and international rating calculation. Edelmira Jaramillo serves as Tournament Director. IA Dynaryn Menéndez García is listed as Chief Arbiter, while Fernando Ascuntar serves as Deputy Chief Arbiter. The current entry list includes players representing numerous federations from South America, North America, Europe, and elsewhere. Therefore, the second edition continues the foundation’s objective of giving Ecuadorian players access to international opposition without requiring them to travel abroad. A separate II Escolar Internacional Atahualpa is currently scheduled from October 22–25, 2026. It uses seven Swiss rounds at 30 minutes + 30 seconds per move and is also registered for national and international rating calculation. Edelmira Jaramillo again serves as Tournament Director.
