♟️ About the Organizer
Forking Knights Chess Academy is a chess tournament organizer based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The organization promotes over-the-board competition through children’s events, open tournaments, and internationally rated competitions. Moreover, it works within the Tamil Nadu chess structure and follows the registration requirements of the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association and Chennai District Chess Association.
Public tournament records trace the academy’s organizing activity to June 2023. At that time, Forking Knights held its first Tamil Nadu State Level Chess Tournament in Chennai. The numbered tournament series later continued in 2025. By June 2026, the organization had reached its sixth state-level edition.
Sundaraiah Y. R. serves as the principal public contact for the academy’s current tournament program. In addition, Vishnuram S supports registrations and participant communication. The organizing team works with qualified arbiters and established chess registration platforms. Therefore, players can access clear entry procedures, published regulations, and official tournament results.
Forking Knights does not rely on one permanent tournament hall. Instead, it uses suitable chess and educational venues across Chennai. Recent locations have included the Hall of Chess at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and P.A.K. Palanisamy Higher Secondary School. This approach allows the academy to adapt each venue to the expected number of players.
🏆 Tournaments and Chess Events
The academy’s main series consists of Tamil Nadu State Level Children’s and Open Chess Tournaments. These one-day events use the Swiss system and follow the applicable rapid chess rules. Moreover, the organizers obtain official TNSCA approval for each edition.
Tournament categories have included Under-8, Under-10, Under-12, Under-15, Under-18, and Open sections. Selected editions have also included prizes for women, veterans, unrated players, and rating groups. In addition, the academy offers extensive trophy and medal programs for young competitors.
Forking Knights manages registrations, entry payments, schedules, player lists, and communication before each event. The team also coordinates pairings, arbitration, prizes, and results. Furthermore, it publishes tournament data through Chess-Results and works with platforms such as EasyPayChess, ChessFee, ChessEntry, and BookMyFee.
The organization expanded its program significantly in 2026. Its first unrestricted Forking Knights International FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament runs from August 5–9 in Chennai. FIDE lists a standard time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one.
A separate FIDE-rated blitz tournament follows on August 9. Players receive three minutes plus a two-second increment per move. Meanwhile, the Forking Knights International FIDE Rated Below-1650 Open takes place from August 21–23. That competition uses 30 minutes plus a 30-second increment.
🌱 Youth Chess and Player Development
Youth competition forms the central part of the Forking Knights program. The academy creates separate categories for boys and girls at several age levels. Therefore, children can compete against players at a similar stage of development.
The events also give young players experience with tournament clocks, Swiss pairings, tiebreak systems, and formal chess rules. Moreover, participants must complete the relevant state and district registrations. These requirements introduce developing players to the structure of official tournament chess.
Forking Knights uses trophies, medals, and participation certificates to recognize a broad group of players. For example, its fifth state-level tournament offered awards across five age categories. The organizers also recognized the youngest boy and girl. As a result, the competition rewarded both leading players and younger newcomers.
The academy also includes Open sections at selected state-level events. Consequently, juniors can share a tournament environment with adult and experienced competitors. Stronger young players can later progress into the academy’s FIDE-rated standard and blitz events.
Through frequent state-level tournaments and its growing international program, Forking Knights provides several routes into competitive chess. Beginners can start in age-group competitions. Meanwhile, more experienced players can pursue national and international rating opportunities.
