♟️ About the Organizer
Förderverein Schach ASP Hoyerswerda e.V., commonly known as FVS ASP Hoyerswerda, is an established chess club based in Hoyerswerda, Saxony, Germany.
The organization’s chess tradition began in 1958, when BSG Aktivist Schwarze Pumpe founded its chess section. Between 1972 and 1985, the club developed a particularly successful junior program. Its young players competed at a high level in East Germany and also took part in international youth competitions.
After several organizational changes, the members of the SC Hoyerswerda chess section joined FVS ASP Hoyerswerda in 2012. The independent chess club has continued the city’s long competitive tradition since then.
The abbreviation ASP maintains the historical connection with Aktivist Schwarze Pumpe. It also reflects the club motto, “per aspera ad astra,” meaning “through hardships to the stars.”
The club welcomes children, adults, beginners, and experienced tournament players. Junior training takes place on Friday afternoons, followed by the adult club evening. Jan Kregelin serves as the official club contact.
🏆 Tournaments and Team Chess
FVS ASP Hoyerswerda participates actively in Saxon and regional team competitions. The organization enters several adult and youth teams, which allows members of different ages and playing strengths to compete regularly.
The first team has represented Hoyerswerda in the Oberliga Ost and currently competes in the Sachsenliga. Additional teams play in state, district, and local competitions. Therefore, developing players can progress gradually through the club’s team structure.
The organization’s principal annual event is the International Sparkassenturnier. This long-running rapid team tournament attracts clubs, titled players, and international visitors to Hoyerswerda.
The 33rd Sparkassenturnier takes place on September 12 and 13, 2026, at VISAVIS in Hoyerswerda. Teams consist of four regular players and may include one reserve. All teams compete together over 13 Swiss-system rounds at a time control of 10 minutes plus five seconds per move.
The organizers divide the prizes into two rating categories. As a result, both strong teams and lower-rated participants can compete for meaningful awards. Individual board prizes also recognize successful performances on each team board.
Roland Graf serves as tournament director. He has supported the Sparkassenturnier and many other club competitions for several years.
🌱 Junior Chess and Local Activities
Junior development remains an important part of the club’s work. FVS ASP Hoyerswerda provides weekly training and enters young players in regional leagues, individual championships, and age-group competitions.
The club has traditionally organized the Hoyerswerda Junior City Championship. This event gives children from local schools and chess groups an opportunity to gain tournament experience within suitable age categories.
The Sparkassenturnier program has also included a tournament for grammar schools. In addition, the club has organized competitions in the Lausitz-Center, bringing chess into a public setting and introducing the game to new families.
Other recurring activities have included the Hoyerswerda City Blitz Championship and the Easter Blitz Tournament. These events supplement league chess and create additional opportunities for regular club competition.
Through team participation, junior instruction, public events, and its international rapid tournament, FVS ASP Hoyerswerda continues to support chess in Hoyerswerda and the wider Upper Lusatia region.
