FIDE International Academy Bulchess is a Bulgarian chess academy and tournament organizer. FIDE lists it among its endorsed academies at Tier 2. Moreover, the academy entered the FIDE system during the second quarter of 2020. This recognition connects its development work with international training standards.

Zhivko Zhekov directs the academy and serves as its main public contact. He holds the International Arbiter title and a current Category C licence. In addition, his work covers tournament direction, arbitration, player communication, and event coordination.

The academy developed through cooperation between experienced Bulgarian chess professionals and partner clubs. Chess Club Etar publicly identified itself as a co-founder in 2021. Therefore, Bulchess maintains strong links with established clubs, coaches, arbiters, and tournament officials.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Activity

The academy organizes and supports classical, rapid, and festival-style chess events across Bulgaria. Its leading projects include Primorsko Open and Ropotamo Cup. Moreover, both festivals offer separate competitions for different rating groups. They also combine tournament chess with accommodation at Black Sea resort venues.

Primorsko Open 2026 is organized with Chess Club Shah XXI. The programme contains a nine-round Open A and a seven-round Open B. In addition, both sections use 45 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The organizers also coordinate registration and accommodation through a dedicated tournament email.

The Ropotamo Cup follows a similar festival model in Primorsko. It offers separate A and B competitions with published rating limits. Consequently, club players and developing competitors can select a suitable section. The prize structure also includes awards for women, seniors, and junior players.

Beyond Primorsko, Bulchess collaborates with chess clubs, municipalities, and local institutions. Recent projects include the Burgas Open and Opakus Open. Moreover, the academy has supported established events in Shabla and other Bulgarian communities. These partnerships extend its tournament activity beyond one region.

Qualified arbiters supervise the academy’s major competitions. They manage pairings, results, appeals, and tournament regulations. Meanwhile, the organizing team handles entries, accommodation requests, schedules, and participant communication. Therefore, players receive clear information before and during each event.
