♟️ About Fenain et Hornaing Echecs

Fenain et Hornaing Echecs is an active chess club serving the neighboring communities of Fenain and Hornaing in the Nord department of France. The current association was formed in 2004 through the merger of the chess clubs of Fenain and Hornaing, bringing the two local chess communities together under a single organization. The club is affiliated with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) under club code R59095. It currently has a substantial playing base, with the FFE listing 31 Licence A members and 111 Licence B members. Regular club activity takes place at the Maison des Associations – Chapelle Heurteau Rénovée in Hornaing. Grégory Accettone serves as President and is the principal public contact for the club. He is also closely involved in tournament organization and has directed the annual Open International de Fenain for many years.

🏆 Open International de Fenain

The club’s flagship competition is the Open International de Fenain, one of its longest-running tournament projects. The event has developed into an established fixture in the Hauts-de-France chess calendar. Recent editions have used a seven-round classical format, FIDE rating, Haley accelerated pairings, category prizes, and a schedule spread across four days. The 28e Open International de Fenain 2027 takes place from February 20–23 at the Salle Polyvalente beside Fenain Town Hall. It is a seven-round FIDE-rated classical tournament played at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The tournament is limited to 100 players and offers a published prize fund of up to €1,700, including a guaranteed €500 first prize. Grégory Accettone is the organizer, while Stéphane Renard serves as chief arbiter. The same organizing team has worked together on several previous editions, providing continuity to the tournament. The 2026 Open attracted 100 players representing seven national federations and 31 different clubs. Several Fenain-Hornaing members competed successfully, including Arthur Trannoy, who finished fourth.

⚡ Rapid, Blitz & Regional Events

Fenain et Hornaing Echecs also organizes and hosts shorter-time-control competitions. In 2025, the Comité Départemental du Jeu d’Échecs du Nord entrusted the club with organizing the Championnat du Nord de Blitz and associated rapid competition in Hornaing. The event was held at Salle des Fêtes Eusebio Ferrari and brought together players from across the department. These events complement the annual classical Open and give the club experience across different tournament formats, including FIDE Standard, Rapid, and Blitz competition. The club’s activity therefore extends beyond one annual festival. It participates regularly in the regional chess calendar and works with the Nord departmental chess committee and the Hauts-de-France league on official competitions.

🌱 Junior Chess & Development

Junior development forms an important part of Fenain et Hornaing Echecs. The FFE currently lists the club with a regional youth interclub team, giving younger players an opportunity to represent Fenain-Hornaing in structured team competition. The club’s large Licence B membership also reflects substantial participation beyond classical tournament players, including beginners, recreational players, and younger members developing toward competitive chess. Recent regional competitions regularly feature Fenain-Hornaing juniors. Players from the club participate in rapid, blitz, classical, departmental, and regional tournaments alongside more experienced members. Regular Saturday sessions in Hornaing provide a local base for training, friendly games, preparation, and organized chess activity.

🥇 Team Chess & Competitive Activity

Fenain et Hornaing Echecs competes in the French national interclub structure. Its leading team currently plays in Nationale 3, one of the national divisions of the French team championship. The club combines experienced adult players with younger competitors and maintains a substantial group of active FFE members. This competitive structure complements the club’s tournament-organizing role. Members can progress from local practice and junior competition into official regional and national team chess, while the annual Fenain Open provides further opportunities to face players from across France and abroad.

📚 History & Development

Chess activity in Fenain predates the present combined club. The current Fenain et Hornaing Echecs organization emerged in 2004 when the local clubs of Fenain and Hornaing joined forces. Since then, the association has maintained activities in both communities while developing the Open International de Fenain into a recurring FIDE-rated competition. The club now combines a large recreational and competitive membership, junior development, national team chess, regional competition, rapid and blitz events, and its long-running international classical Open. Its cooperation with Fenain, Hornaing, the departmental chess committee, and the wider Hauts-de-France chess structure allows it to remain active throughout the season rather than functioning only as an annual tournament organizer.
