The Federación Insular de Ajedrez de Gran Canaria (FIAGC) is the official island-level chess federation for Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. Based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, it coordinates federated chess activity across the island and serves clubs, players, arbiters, coaches, and competition organizers. FIAGC forms part of the territorial structure of the Federación Canaria de Ajedrez, linking Gran Canaria’s chess community with regional and national competition. The federation manages an extensive calendar of island championships, team leagues, youth competitions, rapid and blitz events, and international tournaments. It also works with local chess clubs and public institutions to develop chess throughout Gran Canaria. Ciriaco Almeida Sánchez serves as President of the Federación Insular de Ajedrez de Gran Canaria and remains closely involved in tournament organization and direction. 🏆 Tournament Activity

The federation organizes or coordinates competitions across classical, rapid, and blitz chess. One of its principal international events in 2026 was the XVIII Open Internacional de Ajedrez Memorial Pedro Lezcano Montalvo, played from March 28 to April 5, 2026 in Gran Canaria. The event used a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move and attracted titled and international players alongside Spanish and Canary Islands competitors. FIAGC provided the tournament infrastructure, while official games were also made available through major live-chess platforms. During 2026, the federation also ran island individual championships, veterans competitions, youth events, and several tournaments integrated into the broader Gran Canaria chess circuit. Local clubs frequently collaborate with FIAGC as hosts or co-organizers, allowing competitions to rotate through different municipalities across the island.

Team competition is an important part of Gran Canaria’s federated chess structure. In 2026, FIAGC coordinated the Liga por Equipos de Gran Canaria, with divisions including Preferente, Primera, and several Segunda sections. The regular team season ran during the first half of the year, and the final league round took place in Arucas on May 16, 2026. Clubs competed for divisional titles as well as promotion and relegation positions. FIAGC also organizes a separate Liga de Promoción for younger players.
