♟️ About the Organizer
Federación de Ajedrez del Sur del Gran Buenos Aires, commonly abbreviated as FASGBA, is a regional chess federation serving clubs and players across the southern area of Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina. The federation coordinates organized chess among affiliated clubs in cities and districts including Avellaneda, Banfield, Bernal, Claypole, Lanús, Lomas de Zamora, Monte Grande, Quilmes, Remedios de Escalada, Temperley, and Wilde. FASGBA is an affiliated member of the Federación Argentina de Ajedrez, connecting its clubs and players with Argentina’s national chess structure. Its work includes tournament organization, club coordination, regional rankings, player development, and support for competitions submitted for national and international rating.
🏆 Tournaments and Chess Events
FASGBA organizes an extensive program of over-the-board competitions for players of different ages and playing strengths. Its calendar includes regional team leagues, individual championships, promotional tournaments, category competitions, youth events, rapid and blitz tournaments, and FIDE-rated classical competitions. The FASGBA Liga Mayor brings together teams representing affiliated clubs throughout southern Greater Buenos Aires, while the federation’s category system gives developing players a structured route through competitive chess. In 2026, FASGBA is also working with the Argentine Chess Federation on the 101st Argentine Absolute Chess Championship Semifinal, scheduled for August 22–29 in Avellaneda. The national semifinal offers qualification places for the final of Argentina’s principal individual championship and includes specific prizes for FASGBA and Avellaneda players.
🌱 Regional Chess Development
The federation supports a broad network of traditional chess clubs, sports institutions, educational organizations, municipal programs, and university chess groups. Its official club directory provides information about affiliated organizations, playing venues, training schedules, and contact channels, helping players locate chess activities throughout the region. FASGBA also publishes regional news, tournament results, rankings, regulations, and annual competition information. By coordinating clubs and providing regular competitive opportunities, the federation supports junior development, adult club chess, team competition, arbiter activity, and participation in nationally rated events. The current executive committee took office in August 2025, with Alejandro Méndez serving as president. His position is confirmed by FASGBA’s current executive-committee document and by the official regulations for the 2026 Argentine Championship semifinal.
