Federació Catalana d’Escacs (FCE)

♟️ Federation Overview

Federació Catalana d’Escacs (FCE) is the governing chess federation for Catalonia, Spain. It was constituted on August 2, 1925, and in 2025 it marked its 100th anniversary. The federation’s statutes define it as a private nonprofit entity of public utility and civic and social interest. From its headquarters in Barcelona, FCE manages a broad institutional structure that links clubs, players, schools, arbiters, trainers, and territorial delegations across Catalonia. Its official platform also serves as the central public hub for rules, calendars, circulars, rankings, club services, and federation news. Since May 2025, Ramon Chalmeta i Ugas has served as president.

🏆 Competitions and Chess Structure

Competition stands at the center of FCE’s public work. The federation runs and coordinates a dense calendar that includes the Lliga Catalana, the Circuit Català, the Campionat de Catalunya per Edats, the Campionat de Catalunya Absolut, the Campionat de Catalunya de Veterans, and the Ciutat de Barcelona event structure. Its official site also publishes separate territorial calendars for Barcelona, Girona, Tarragona, and Lleida, which shows how the federation connects local and national-level chess within one system. In 2026, the federation continued to publish live broadcasts, live boards, and reports from major competitions, including top-division league matches and the youth championship cycle. This makes FCE more than an administrative body. It is also one of the main chess organizers in Catalonia.

🌍 Education, Inclusion, and Public Reach

FCE also plays a strong role in education, youth development, and inclusive chess initiatives. Its official school section shows long-term work in Escacs a l’escola, and the federation publicly marked the program’s 10th anniversary with a dedicated Chess and Education Day. That educational line continues through activities such as the Congrés i Escola, which brings together teachers, school leaders, chess educators, and families. At the same time, the federation has built a visible women’s and equality program. Its official pages include the Pla d’Igualtat de la Federació Catalana d’Escacs, and in 2026 the second edition of La Dama dels Escacs drew more than 50 participants to a mixed-pairs tournament and a public discussion program. These initiatives show a federation that works on access, visibility, and long-term chess culture as well as competition.
