♟️ About Egyptian Chess Federation
The Egyptian Chess Federation (ECF) is the national governing body for chess in Egypt. Based in Cairo, the federation represents Egyptian chess within FIDE and the African Chess Confederation, while coordinating national championships, international participation, ratings, tournament organization, youth development, and technical chess activity across the country. The federation dates to 1947 and has played a central role in the development of Egyptian and African chess for decades. Egypt belongs to FIDE Zone 4.1 – North Africa and has become one of the strongest chess nations on the African continent. The federation is currently led by Mokhtar Emara, whose name appears in international chess directories as Moukhtar Mohamed Moukhtar. He was elected President for the 2024–2028 term. The federation’s current leadership also includes experienced chess officials and titled players involved in administration, ratings, international relations, and national-team activity.🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities
The Egyptian Chess Federation manages a broad competitive program covering classical, Rapid, Blitz, youth, women’s, team, and national championship chess. National competitions provide qualification and development opportunities for players from clubs throughout Egypt. The federation also supervises official rating activity and works with FIDE-approved arbiters and organizers to ensure that internationally rated tournaments meet technical requirements. Egypt regularly sends national teams and individual players to the Chess Olympiad, African Championships, Arab Championships, World Youth events, and other international competitions. At the same time, the federation has increasingly focused on bringing major international events to Egypt. In 2025, the federation hosted the African Individual Chess Championships in Cairo and Giza. The tournament brought together leading players from across the continent in Open and Women’s sections and served as an important qualification event within the African chess calendar. The following year, Egypt expanded its international tournament program further with Arab youth events and preparations for another major FIDE world championship.🌱 Youth Chess & Development
Youth chess is a major part of the federation’s work. ECF organizes Egyptian junior and youth championships in several age categories and selects players to represent the country in African, Arab, and world competitions. Egypt has a particularly strong tradition of producing young players who later progress into international master and grandmaster competition. National junior championships therefore serve as an important pathway between club chess, federation competition, and international representation. The federation also works with clubs, academies, coaches, arbiters, and tournament organizers throughout Egypt. These relationships create opportunities for young players to compete in rated tournaments and gain experience under FIDE regulations. In addition, ECF has supported technical education for chess officials. Over the years, the federation has organized FIDE Arbiter Seminars and other training activities designed to improve tournament administration and strengthen Egypt’s pool of qualified arbiters.🌍 International Championships in Egypt
Egypt has developed significant experience in hosting major international chess championships. In 2023, the Egyptian Chess Federation hosted the FIDE World Cadet Chess Championships U8, U10 and U12 in Sharm El Sheikh. More than 500 young players representing dozens of national federations competed across six Open and Girls categories. In 2025, Cairo hosted the African Individual Chess Championships, with Open and Women’s tournaments bringing together players from across Africa. The federation continues this international hosting program in December 2026 with the FIDE World U7–U17 Rapid & Blitz Championships in Cairo. The event features U7, U9, U11, U13, U15, and U17 categories, each divided into Open and Girls championships. The Egyptian Chess Federation serves as the host and organizing committee for the event under FIDE regulations and with the patronage of the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports. The federation manages registration, accommodation coordination, payments, delegation communication, and tournament logistics. Egypt has also secured the right to host the African Zone Championship qualifying for the 2027 FIDE World Cup, further strengthening its position as an important tournament destination within African chess.🥇 Egyptian Chess & International Representation
Egypt has produced some of Africa’s most successful chess players. The country’s leading competitors have won African titles, represented Egypt at numerous Chess Olympiads, and competed in World Cup and other major FIDE events. Among the best-known Egyptian players are GM Bassem Amin, GM Ahmed Adly, GM Adham Fawzy, and several generations of International Masters, Women Grandmasters, and other titled players. The federation also maintains a strong presence in women’s chess. Egyptian players have repeatedly won continental titles and represented the country in African, Arab, Olympiad, and world competitions. This combination of elite competition, youth development, national championships, and international event organization gives the Egyptian Chess Federation a central role in both Egyptian and African chess.📚 History & Development
Since its establishment in 1947, the Egyptian Chess Federation has developed alongside the growth of organized chess in Africa and the Arab world. Its responsibilities have expanded from national tournament administration to international ratings, elite-player development, youth programs, technical education, national-team management, and the organization of major FIDE and continental competitions. The current 2024–2028 administration has also emphasized international cooperation. In 2026, the federation signed a cooperation agreement with the Qatar Chess Association aimed at exchanging expertise and strengthening chess development between the two countries. Together with its growing international tournament calendar, these partnerships reflect an increasing focus on positioning Egypt as a regional center for competitive chess.
