Échiquier du Pays de Liffré is an active chess club based in Liffré, Brittany, France. Founded on May 10, 2007, the association promotes competitive chess, chess education, youth development, team competition, and major open tournaments for players from Liffré and the wider Rennes area. The club plays at the Espace Intergénérations, 7 Rue des Écoles, 35340 Liffré, where regular activities take place on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. The organization welcomes children from around six years old, adult beginners, recreational players, and experienced competitors. Moreover, members can progress from introductory lessons to FFE- and FIDE-rated competition within the same club structure. Laëtitia Catherinot currently serves as President and principal club contact. She is also an FFE Open 2 Arbiter and works directly with beginner players in the club’s chess school. Dominique Ruhlmann, one of the club’s founders, currently serves as Treasurer and remains deeply involved in tournament organization and arbitration.

🌍 Open International de Liffré

The club’s flagship tournament is the Open International de Liffré. First organized in 2015, the tournament has developed into a substantial week-long international classical event during the autumn school holidays. It attracts French and international players, including grandmasters, international masters, FIDE Masters, strong juniors, and experienced club competitors. The 12th Open International de Liffré takes place from October 17–23, 2026 at the Espace Intergénérations. The 2026 edition offers two tournaments: Tournament A: for players rated 1650 Elo and above Tournament B: for players rated below 1750 Elo Both sections use nine rounds of classical chess with a time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, plus a 30-second increment from move one. The tournament receives FIDE and FFE rating. In addition, Tournament A provides an environment in which eligible players can pursue international title norms.

🏆 International Tournament Tradition

The International Open has grown steadily since its first edition. The tournament has attracted titled players from France and several other federations. Recent editions have featured competitors from countries including India, Bulgaria, Germany, England, and other European and international federations. In 2024, French International Master Floryan Eugène won the tournament, while FM Adrien Rodriguez achieved an International Master norm. The 2025 edition was won by Indian International Master Muthaiah AL, and French FM Louis Vallée achieved his first IM norm. These results demonstrate that Liffré has developed from a regional chess venue into a tournament capable of offering serious competitive opportunities to ambitious players. A FIDE-rated blitz tournament is also held during the festival. In 2026, the blitz takes place on October 21 over nine rounds at 3 minutes plus 2 seconds per move.

⚡ Rapide de Liffré

Another important annual event is the Rapide de Liffré. The 14th edition took place on June 28, 2026 at the Espace Intergénérations. The competition included several sections so that players of different ages and ratings could compete under suitable conditions. Tournament A and Tournament B received FIDE rapid rating, while a separate Petits Pions competition provided an accessible format for younger children. The main rapid competitions used nine rounds at 12 minutes plus 3 seconds per move and offered a combined prize fund of €1,000. The tournament has become the club’s traditional end-of-season event and combines competitive rapid chess with the welcoming atmosphere that Échiquier du Pays de Liffré emphasizes in its tournament organization.

🎓 Chess School and Training

Chess education is one of the central activities of Échiquier du Pays de Liffré. The club’s chess school accepts both young players and adults. Training groups are organized according to playing level, experience, and motivation. Beginners train with Laëtitia Catherinot, while Dominique Ruhlmann and Jean-Pierre Vassaux work with developing players. More experienced competitors receive advanced training from Grandmaster Pierre Bailet. His sessions cover tactics, strategy, endings, competition preparation, and analysis of games. The club also uses the established Steps Method – Méthode par étapes, FFE educational material, Lichess, and PGN training files. Therefore, members can follow a structured progression from learning the rules to preparing for serious tournament competition.

🌱 Youth Chess Development

Youth development has been a defining feature of the club since its creation. During its first season in 2007–08, Échiquier du Pays de Liffré had only 15 members. However, young players quickly began qualifying for departmental, Brittany, and French championships. Over subsequent seasons, the club developed several junior teams and produced numerous departmental and regional champions. At its peak during the 2016–17 period, the club exceeded 100 members and fielded six adult teams and four youth teams. The youth program remains highly competitive today. The club currently participates in Nationale 2 Jeunes, while its players continue to qualify for the Brittany and French Youth Championships. In 2026, nine Liffré players represented the club at the Brittany Youth Championships, with five qualifying for the next stage of competition.

🐗 Sangliers and Marcassins

The club also organizes its own recurring youth rapid series, known as Sangliers and Marcassins. These tournaments give developing players frequent competitive practice without requiring them to travel to external events. Players compete in short rapid tournaments throughout the season. The Marcassins section provides an entry point for developing competitors, while stronger players move into the Sangliers group. The format encourages progression based on results and experience. For example, the June 2026 edition attracted 32 participants, while another stage in March drew more than 40 players. These internal competitions complement formal coaching and help young players become comfortable with clocks, tournament procedures, pairings, and competitive decision-making.

♜ Adult and Youth Interclubs

Échiquier du Pays de Liffré participates actively in the French team-chess structure. The club’s leading adult team currently competes in Nationale 4, while its strongest youth team plays in Nationale 2 Jeunes. Additional teams and regional competitions give a wider group of members opportunities to represent the club. Team chess has been part of Liffré’s identity almost from the beginning. By the 2009–10 season, only three years after its foundation, the adult team had already earned promotion to Nationale 4. The club later reached even higher levels, including promotion to Nationale 3 for adults and the Top Jeunes structure for its junior program during its strongest historical periods.

👩 Women’s and Inclusive Chess

The club has also promoted chess among girls and women throughout its history. Earlier seasons included women’s interclub teams and participation in the Brittany Women’s Rapid Championship. Échiquier du Pays de Liffré has also organized special discovery events designed specifically to introduce women and girls to chess in an informal and welcoming setting. More broadly, the association states that its objective is to allow every player to progress at their own pace and regardless of playing level. Sportsmanship is treated alongside chess ability as a central part of training. Consequently, competitive development and respectful behavior form part of the same educational program.

📜 History and Development

Échiquier du Pays de Liffré was created on May 10, 2007 by Dominique and Anne Ruhlmann. The association began its first competitive season with only 15 members. Growth was rapid. Membership reached 28 the following season, 40 in 2009–10, and 65 by 2011–12. The club also expanded competitively. Adult and junior teams earned promotions, young players qualified for French championships, and local schools achieved strong results in academic chess competitions. The first large Liffré Open took place in 2009 and attracted 117 players. Subsequent rapid events continued to grow, while the modern Open International de Liffré was launched in 2015. Today, the association combines regular club chess, professional coaching, junior development, national team competition, FIDE-rated rapid chess, and an international classical tournament. Almost two decades after its creation, Échiquier du Pays de Liffré has established itself as one of the active chess organizations in Brittany.
