♟️ About L’Échiquier des gorges de l’Aveyron

L’Échiquier des gorges de l’Aveyron is a French chess club based in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, Tarn-et-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. Affiliated with the Fédération Française des Échecs under club code V82009, the organization provides regular chess activity for both adults and young players. Its official seat and regular playing venue are located at École Publique Paul Bayrou on Place des Tilleuls. The club combines weekly chess sessions with regional team competition, youth activity, community initiatives, and tournament organization. It competes in both adult and youth regional Interclubs. In addition, its work has included school chess, local championships, training opportunities, and support for players who want to develop their competitive experience. Tournament organization has become one of the club's defining activities. Led by Philippe Pagès, L’Échiquier des gorges de l’Aveyron organizes the annual FIDE-rated Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val Open and the long-running Grand Roque d’Anglars rapid tournament. These events bring rated competitive chess to Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val while connecting the club's sporting activity with the distinctive setting of the Aveyron Gorges.

📜 History and Development

The club's roots date to November 2010, when chess activity began before the organization was formally established. L’Échiquier des gorges de l’Aveyron was officially created in May 2011. During its first season, much of its activity focused on educational work with children from the local primary school and collège. By October 2011, the club had joined the Fédération Française des Échecs and entered regional team competition. Youth chess was particularly important during this early period, with younger members taking part in regional events and training activities. Since then, the organization has expanded its role from a local teaching and playing club into an established tournament organizer while retaining its community base in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val.

🏆 FIDE Open of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val

The FIDE Open of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val is the club's principal classical tournament. The event reached its 12th edition in 2026, when the festival took place from August 18–23 at the Salle des Thermes in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val. The 2026 program featured two FIDE-rated classical sections: an Open A for players rated above 1600 and an Open B for players below 1800. Both tournaments were played over nine rounds using a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. The festival therefore provides opportunities for players across a broad rating range while maintaining a fully rated classical format. Philippe Pagès serves as the principal organizer, with experienced arbiters supporting the competition. The event has also developed traditions beyond the tournament hall. Following the 2025 edition, the Open A winner's name was engraved into a stone sculpture by Ouidir, which was inaugurated in July 2025.

⚡ Grand Roque d’Anglars

The Grand Roque d’Anglars is the club's established FIDE-rated rapid tournament and has a history longer than the present classical festival. The event had already reached its 20th edition by 2018 and its 21st edition in 2019. It continued with the 25th edition in 2024 and the 26th edition in 2025. On August 21, 2026, the club staged the 27e Rapide FIDE du Grand Roque d’Anglars as part of its summer chess program. Recent editions have generally used a seven-round Swiss format with a rapid time control. The tournament's identity is closely connected with the Grand Roc d’Anglars and the Aveyron river setting around Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val.

🎓 Youth Chess and Local Development

Youth development has been part of the club since its earliest days. When the organization began operating in 2010–2011, much of its initial activity involved chess education for pupils from the local primary school and collège. Younger players quickly represented the new club in regional events and training programs. That youth component remains visible today. The Fédération Française des Échecs lists L’Échiquier des gorges de l’Aveyron in regional youth Interclubs competition alongside its adult regional team. The club has also contributed to official departmental competition. In 2024, it co-organized the Tarn-et-Garonne Chess Championship with the Comité départemental du jeu d’échecs de Tarn-et-Garonne, with play held in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val.

♜ Club and Team Chess

L’Échiquier des gorges de l’Aveyron maintains regular chess activity throughout the season in addition to its summer tournaments. The club participates in regional adult Interclubs and regional youth Interclubs under the Fédération Française des Échecs structure. Regular club sessions are held at École Publique Paul Bayrou. The current published schedule includes sessions on Tuesday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and Wednesday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The club therefore provides both organized competition and a regular local meeting point for chess players in and around Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val.
