Échiquier de l’Erdre is a well-established chess club based in Sucé-sur-Erdre, Loire-Atlantique, France, north of Nantes. The club combines high-level team competition with junior development, chess instruction, local events, and major FIDE-rated tournaments. The organization was founded on October 21, 1988 as Club d’Échecs de l’Erdre by Jean Bertrand, Jacques Bastard, and Jean-Yves Bouguen. On July 19, 1990, it adopted its current name, Échiquier de l’Erdre. One of its first major organizational achievements came in 1992, when Sucé-sur-Erdre hosted the French Youth Chess Championships with more than 800 participants. Mickaël Hutois currently serves as President and principal contact. The French Chess Federation lists the club with 68 Licence A and 14 Licence B players, while its leading adult team competes in Nationale 1, its junior team in Nationale 2 Jeunes, and its women’s team in Nationale 2 Féminine. The FFE also awards Échiquier de l’Erdre the Club Formateur label.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

Tournament organization is an important part of Échiquier de l’Erdre’s identity. The club organizes both classical and rapid competitions, together with youth events, internal tournaments, and seasonal activities. Its principal classical event is the Open FIDE de Sucé-sur-Erdre. The 9ème Open FIDE de Sucé-sur-Erdre 2026 takes place on December 19–20 at the Complexe Sportif de la Papinière. It consists of four separate FIDE-rated sections: Open A, Open B, Open C, and Open Jeunes. All four tournaments are played over five rounds at 60 minutes plus a 30-second increment. The 2025 edition attracted 174 players across its four sections, demonstrating the event’s strong regional appeal. The club’s tournament structure allows competitors to play against opponents within appropriate rating ranges while maintaining a dedicated section for young players. Échiquier de l’Erdre also organizes the long-running Fête des Échecs / Rapide de Sucé-sur-Erdre. The rapid tournament reached its 36th edition in 2026, when the principal competition attracted 91 players. A separate youth tournament is held alongside the main event. Other club activities have included a Christmas Blitz, internal competitions, youth tournaments, and friendly events for members.

🌱 Junior Chess & Training

Junior development has played a major role in the club since its early years. The club’s involvement in organizing the 1992 French Youth Championships, an event with more than 800 participants, demonstrated this commitment at an early stage. Échiquier de l’Erdre has since developed a strong competitive pathway for young players. Its junior teams have achieved significant results. The club won Nationale 2 Jeunes in 2002 and 2022, Nationale 3 Jeunes in 2008, 2017, and 2023, and several departmental junior titles. The senior youth team currently competes in Nationale 2 Jeunes. Individual players developed through the club have also achieved national success. Among the club’s historical results are French youth titles for Solène Algaba and Floryan Eugène, as well as national podium finishes for Axelle Delinotte and Peio Duboué. The club provides regular instruction and maintains dedicated training for both young players and adults. Weekly club sessions are organized at the Complexe Sportif de la Papinière.

🥇 Team Chess & Achievements

Échiquier de l’Erdre has developed a particularly strong record in French team chess. The adult team earned promotion to Nationale 1 in 2014–2015 and later reached the TOP 16 in the 2019–2020 season, placing the club among France’s highest-level team competitors. It was also Nationale 1 champion in 2020. In the Coupe de France, Échiquier de l’Erdre reached the semifinals during the 2016–2017 season. The club has also enjoyed extensive success in the Coupe des Pays de Loire, winning the competition repeatedly, including titles in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023. Its competitive structure now includes adult, junior, and women’s teams, giving members of different ages and playing strengths access to official team competition.

Échiquier de l’Erdre has grown from a local chess association founded in 1988 into one of the more competitive clubs in the Nantes and Loire-Atlantique area. Jean Bertrand, the club’s founding President, later served as President of the Fédération Française des Échecs from 2004 to 2005. The club’s own history also records major organizational achievements, national team promotions, cup successes, and strong individual results across several decades. Today, Échiquier de l’Erdre combines this competitive tradition with structured youth development, regular instruction, FIDE-rated tournament organization, women’s chess, and community activity in Sucé-sur-Erdre.
