Échiquier Couronnais is a French chess club and tournament organizer based in La Couronne, near Angoulême, in the Charente department. It welcomes children, adults, beginners, online players moving into over-the-board chess, and experienced competitors. The club combines regular playing sessions with organized training, team chess, rated tournaments, and community activities. Échiquier Couronnais has developed into the largest chess club in Charente and one of the established clubs in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The club reported 184 licensed members for the 2025–2026 season. Its competitive structure includes adult teams in Nationale 4 and Régionale 1, together with a youth team competing in Nationale 3 Jeunes Poitou-Charentes. Jean-Luc Plassart serves as club president and principal contact. He works alongside a committee, trainers, team captains, activity leaders, and several qualified federal arbiters. Therefore, the club can manage both its weekly chess program and a substantial calendar of official competitions.

Its principal recurring events include the Open des Valois and the Trophée Armand Mazza. The 3rd Open des Valois took place in May 2026 as a six-round FIDE-rated classical tournament. It used a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move and offered a total prize fund of €4,000, including €1,000 for the winner. The event welcomed players across all rating levels and provided category prizes, live-board coverage, an analysis room, and accessible playing conditions. The Trophée Armand Mazza is another important part of the club’s tournament calendar. Its 2026 edition includes separate principal and youth competitions. Both tournaments use seven rounds of rapid chess with a 15+5 time control. The principal tournament is FIDE-rated, while the youth competition creates an accessible format for younger players. In addition, Échiquier Couronnais hosts local blitz tournaments, departmental school championships, senior and veteran competitions, and federation team events. This varied program gives players regular opportunities to compete in several formats throughout the season.
