♟️ About Dun Laoghaire Chess Club

Dun Laoghaire Chess Club is a long-established chess organization based in Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin, Ireland. Its roots go back to the mid-1970s, when local players established Dalkey Chess Club. After the club later moved its activities to Dún Laoghaire, it adopted its present name. In 2025, the organization celebrated its 50th anniversary. The club meets at the Eblana Club, 3 Eblana Avenue, in the center of Dún Laoghaire. Regular club nights take place on Wednesdays and welcome beginners, improving players, experienced competitors, and players interested in casual chess. Training for beginners and intermediate players, rapid and blitz events, internal competitions, and social chess are all part of the program. Competitive chess is an important part of the club’s identity. Dun Laoghaire fields teams in the Armstrong Cup, Heidenfeld Cup, and BEA Trophy, providing opportunities across several levels of the Leinster Chess Leagues. The club also organizes the annual Dun Laoghaire Rapidplay, one of its best-established public tournaments.

📜 History

The club’s modern history began when John O’Riordan sought to establish a local chess club in the Dalkey area during the chess boom that followed the 1972 Fischer–Spassky World Championship. The new Dalkey Chess Club initially met at Our Lady’s Hall and later at St Lawrence’s Hall. As the membership grew, the organization moved to Dún Laoghaire and eventually changed its name to Dún Laoghaire Chess Club. The club marked five decades of activity in 2025 with a special Champion of Champions Tournament featuring eight former Irish champions, including GM Alex Baburin and several International and FIDE Masters.

♜ Leinster League Chess

Dun Laoghaire competes actively in the Leinster Chess Leagues. Its current structure includes a team in the Armstrong Cup, the premier Leinster division, as well as teams in the Heidenfeld Cup and BEA Trophy. This allows both strong competitive players and developing club members to participate in league chess. The club has also invested in developing newer players. In 2025, both its Heidenfeld and Bodley teams earned promotion, with the Bodley team moving into the BEA Trophy.

🎓 Club Activities and Player Development

Wednesday club evenings combine competitive and social chess. Beginners and intermediate players can receive guidance, while stronger members use the sessions for league preparation, analysis, internal competitions, and practice games. The club also maintains a chess library and organizes special training and tournament activities. Liam Farrell is one of the club’s principal active organizers and led the organizing committee for the 2025 anniversary tournament.

⚡ Dun Laoghaire Rapidplay 2026

The 14th Annual Dun Laoghaire Rapidplay takes place on August 30, 2026 at the club’s Eblana Avenue venue. The tournament consists of six rounds at 15 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move. FIDE rapid rules apply, although the tournament itself is not FIDE-rated. The event has a maximum capacity of 40 players and offers €700 in prizes.
